Mu Ko Angthong is a marine park in the Gulf of Thailand in Ko Samui district. The park has a total area of 102 km2, comprising 42 islands. The islands in Mu Ko Angthong National Marine Park are made up of limestone dating back about 260 million years.

The southwestern part of Ko Hintaek, one of the islands in the park, has been separated from the rest of the island – accounting for about 15-20% of the total island area.

Mr Piya explained that the phenomenon could be due to heavy rain and strong waves, adding that boats have been warned to keep a safe distance from Ko Hintaek island as limestone blocks are still breaking off and falling into the sea.
