"Festival City"
Hue is one of the few cities in Vietnam considered a "festival city," a wonderful space for festivals rich in Vietnamese identity, a convergence of Eastern and Western cultures, and opportunities for exploration. Unlike many other tourist cities in Vietnam, despite the ups and downs of history, Hue has maintained its advantage as a green natural destination, preserving centuries-old cultural treasures. This famous heritage city in Central Vietnam also boasts a strong advantage in beach tourism with 127km of coastline and many beautiful beaches. It also features Lang Co Bay – one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Bach Ma National Park, and the Tam Giang lagoon system – the largest lagoon in Vietnam.

After the Hue Imperial Citadel complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, Thua Thien Hue province has made efforts to preserve and promote the value of the relics, attract tourists, and aim for sustainable development and green growth. In 2016, Thua Thien Hue will continue to develop tourism services, heritage tourism, lagoon and beach tourism, and organize many cultural and artistic events. Tourism in Hue will be more convenient with the mobilization of businesses to participate in opening new flight routes in addition to the Hue - Bangkok route and the domestic Hue - Da Lat route…
| The 9th Hue Festival 2016 will take place from April 29th to May 4th with the theme “710 years of Thuan Hoa - Phu Xuan - Thua Thien Hue; Cultural Heritage with Integration and Development”. The opening ceremony will be held on the evening of April 29th at Ngo Mon Square - Hue Citadel. Within the framework of the Festival, there will be participation from art troupes from 18 countries across 5 continents, along with dozens of domestic art troupes, promising to deliver spectacular performances. |
MUST-SEE TOURIST ATTRACTIONS WHEN VISITING HUE
Palace architecture
To this day, Hue still holds many mysteries surrounding its citadels, tombs, palaces, temples, and shrines.
Hue Imperial City
Built during the reigns of Emperors Gia Long and Minh Mạng, located north of the Perfume River and facing south, the appearance of the Hue Imperial Citadel is a unique blend of Western and Eastern citadel architecture. After nearly 200 years, the citadel remains almost completely intact, with nearly 140 large and small buildings.
To explore the historical site, you will pass through three concentric walls in the following order: the Citadel, the Imperial City (Dai Noi), and the Forbidden City. The Dai Noi comprises over 100 beautiful architectural structures divided into many areas, from Ngo Mon Gate to Thai Hoa Palace – where major court ceremonies were held; Trieu Mieu, Thai Mieu, Hung Mieu, The Mieu, and Phung Tien Palace – where the Nguyen dynasty emperors were worshipped; and the Imperial Household Department – a warehouse for storing valuables and a workshop for manufacturing items for the royal family. Meanwhile, Co Ha Garden and Kham Van Palace were where the princes studied and played. The Forbidden City is a walled enclosure within the Imperial City, located behind Thai Hoa Palace, reserved exclusively for the emperor and his family, and includes nearly 50 large and small architectural structures.

Here, hundreds of rare and precious artifacts from the Nguyen Dynasty are preserved and displayed, such as porcelain used in daily royal meals or banquets, silver, bronze, enamel, and wooden artifacts. Decorative items from the royal palace, such as gold leaf branches, reliefs, and mirror paintings, are also on display. More than just a museum, the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum allows visitors to discover the vivid traces of life in the Nguyen Dynasty's royal court.

Tombs - masterpieces of ancient architecture
The complex of tombs of the Nguyen emperors is an important part of the Hue Imperial City complex. The Nguyen dynasty spanned 13 emperors, but due to historical circumstances, only 7 emperors built tombs, including: Gia Long Tomb (1814), Minh Mang Tomb (1840), Thieu Tri Tomb (1847), Tu Duc Tomb (1864), Dong Khanh Tomb (1888), Duc Duc Tomb (1889) and Khai Dinh Tomb (1920).

Among the royal tombs, the Minh Mang Tomb, the Tu Duc Tomb, and the Khai Dinh Tomb are the three most elaborately designed. The Tu Duc Tomb, in particular, boasts a royal garden style, offering visitors a sense of tranquility and serenity. Within the tomb complex is the Minh Khiem Hall, a theater serving the king, considered the oldest theater in Vietnam today. No other tomb complex in the world has a theater like the Tu Duc Tomb. These unique characteristics create a distinct cultural value compared to the tomb complexes of other Nguyen emperors.

| Former UNESCO Director-General Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, upon visiting Hue, once wrote: “Each royal tomb, with its unique character, is a magnificent achievement of landscape architecture; and each tomb evokes a special resonance in the emotions of visitors. Gia Long's tomb, amidst a vast natural garden, evokes a majestic and serene impression; Minh Mang's tomb is full of solemnity, and Tu Duc's tomb offers visitors a gentle, poetic soul.” |
Additional information:
+ Directions: The tombs are located southwest of Hue city. The best starting point to visit all the tombs is the Nam Giao Altar at the end of Dien Bien Phu Street.

Besides architectural structures such as the Phuoc Duyen Tower, Dai Hung Hall, Dia Tang Hall, Quan Am Hall, along with stone steles and bronze bells, Thien Mu Pagoda also houses many valuable artifacts. The Buddha statues, horizontal plaques, and couplets all bear witness to the pagoda's glorious historical periods. Many tourists visiting Hue often spend time at the pagoda to find peace, worship, and admire the tranquil Perfume River.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
Listen to Hue folk songs and release lanterns on the Perfume River.
Visiting Hue without enjoying Hue folk singing is like not having visited Hue at all. The Hue folk singing orchestra typically features musicians dressed in silk robes and turbans, playing instruments such as the two-stringed fiddle (đàn nhị), moon lute (đàn nguyệt), flute, and zither (đàn bầu). The singers, dressed in traditional ao dai (Vietnamese long dress), play instruments like the song loan and sênh tiền.
As the city lights begin to come on, the ideal setting is to lean against the railing of a boat, sip a small glass of wine, and let your mind wander to the rhythm of the music while releasing floating lanterns on the Perfume River, sailing from Thien Mu Pagoda wharf, past the Imperial City, to Vy Da.

Additional information:
Currently, there are nearly 500 actors and musicians in Hue who have been granted licenses to perform Hue folk songs.
