Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said the country welcomed nearly 5.5 million international tourists in 2022, a 251.28% increase compared to 2021, exceeding the 5.2 million figure announced last month as well as the target of 3.6 million.
Speaking at the weekly press conference on February 6th, Minister Sandiaga stated that the "nation of a thousand islands" had welcomed a total of 895,120 international tourists in December 2022, an increase of 447.08% compared to the same period in 2021 and 36.19% compared to the previous month.
According to Mr. Sandiaga, in December 2022 alone, the number of international tourists from Singapore saw the highest increase at 20.15%, followed by Malaysia at 17.98%, Australia at 11.42%, Timor Leste at 8.4%, and India at 5.61%.
Indonesia welcomed nearly 5.5 million international tourists in 2022.
Meanwhile, the occupancy rate at star-rated hotels reached 56.9%, an increase of 5.33% compared to December 2021.
To increase the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia, Minister Sandiaga has urged travel agencies and airlines to offer more innovative tour packages, as well as to increase direct flights.
Mr. Sandiaga also revealed a tourism promotion campaign in overseas markets and on digital platforms, particularly focusing on the “5 super-priority destinations,” also known as the “5 new Balis,” which include Lake Toba in North Sumatra province, Borobudur Temple in Central Java province, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara province, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara province, and Likupang in North Sulawesi province.
Simultaneously, Indonesia will focus on the "Proud of Indonesian Tourism" program with the goal of attracting 1.4 billion domestic tourists in 2023, as well as reversing the trend of Indonesian citizens traveling abroad through collaborative and innovative methods.
In 2023, Indonesia's tourism industry aimed to welcome 3.5 million to 7.4 million international tourists and 1.2 to 1.4 billion domestic tourists, generating foreign exchange earnings of US$2.07 to US$5.95 billion, contributing US$82 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and creating 22.4 million jobs.
According to the Report on the socio-economic situation in the fourth quarter and the year 2022 by the General Statistics Office, the number of international visitors to Vietnam in 2022 reached over 3.66 million people.
