29/06/2020

On June 24, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officially opened Chao Phraya Sky Park - a public park built from abandoned railway tracks. The event was attended by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and senior officials.

The park, located between the traffic lanes on Phra Pok Klao Bridge, was built on the abandoned Lavalin Skytrain line and has entry and exit points at both ends. The walkways are decorated with many tropical plants, suitable for Bangkok's hot weather.

The railway was built in 1984 but had been abandoned for more than 30 years until the BMA came up with the idea of building a park a few years ago. The renovation took a year and cost about 130 million baht. The park, which acts as a pedestrian bridge, connects King Prajadhipok Park on the Phra Nakhon side with Chaloem Phrakiat Forest Park on the Thon Buri side.

The BMA hopes the park will help boost tourism in the capital. The park is open daily from 5am to 8pm.
