Mongolia opens to international tourists

17/02/2022

Since February 14, Mongolia has officially opened its borders, allowing vaccinated international visitors to enter the country, after two years of strict anti-epidemic measures that have isolated the country.

Mongolia’s cabinet has approved a resolution to lower the country’s “epidemic readiness status” from orange to yellow, lifting restrictions on business operations. The downgrade also means the country of 3 million people will fully reopen its borders and resume international travel.

Mr. L.Oyun-Erdene - Prime Minister of Mongolia also announced the lifting of all Covid-19 restrictions (except for border posts), only managing vaccination, recommending people to wash their hands, wear masks and keep distance to protect themselves.

“If fully vaccinated, tourists and investors are welcome to Mongolia without any additional requirements. Unvaccinated tourists are also welcome in Mongolia and will be vaccinated here if eligible,” said Mr. L.Oyun-Erdene.

The reason why the Mongolian government is rushing to open internationally is that currently, 92% of adults in Mongolia have been fully vaccinated, of which 52% of the priority group have received the third dose and 90,000 Mongolians have received the fourth dose. Mongolian officials also affirmed that the country is a safe destination for tourists.

Previously, since November 2022, strict restrictions have caused exports and freight transport in Mongolia to stagnate, and many businesses and schools to close. This has forced Mongolia to quickly implement the "New Recovery Policy" to overcome the damage caused by Covid-19 and restore the economy.
