Known as the “Tiaki Promise,” this campaign encourages visitors to experience New Zealand through “sustainable tourism,” demonstrated by practical actions that help protect the natural environment and preserve and respect the country’s unique culture. The New Zealand government believes this will raise awareness among visitors and protect and preserve the beauty of New Zealand for the present and the future.

Speaking to the press, Chairman of the Local Government Council Dave Cull said: “Tourism is one of the major sources of revenue for the national economy. However, tourism development without a specific direction will inevitably have an impact on the natural environment and the unique ecosystem of the country. We hope that building tourism campaigns will raise awareness among local and international tourists, thereby improving the quality of tourism and the mindset of everyone regarding tourism.”

Quoting a senior New Zealand tourism official, the “Tiaki Promise” campaign reminds people to engage in tourism responsibly, from simply disposing of trash properly and driving safely to exploring natural landscapes in a civilized manner.

The “Tiaki Promise” tourism campaign will inform and introduce tourists from the moment they submit their visa application to New Zealand, as well as throughout their stay in the country, in four languages: English, German, Chinese, and the native Te Reo Maori. The campaign also encourages tourists to share their positive experiences and actions on social media using the hashtag #tiakipromise.

The “Tiaki Promise” tourism campaign is a coordinated tourism promotion effort involving major organizations operating in New Zealand's tourism sector, including Air New Zealand, the New Zealand Tourism Agency, the National Conservation Authority, and local state governments.
