Japanese restaurant bans Japanese customers, only serves foreigners

A Japanese restaurant on Ishigaki Island has been turning its back on Japanese customers until September 2019. The restaurant owner said that domestic customers were behaving badly, so he decided to impose the ban.

Recently, in a Facebook post, Mr. Akio Arima, 42 years old manager of Menya Yaeyama Style restaurant wrote: “From July to September, we stopped accepting Japanese customers and only serve foreign customers. If you are Japanese but living abroad, please show us your ID.” Mr. Arima added that the restaurant only has 8 seats at the counter, so please order (at least one bowl of noodles) per customer.

However, the reason why the restaurant Menya Yaeyama Style - which specializes in serving traditional Japanese ramen and rice - restricts Japanese customers goes beyond the ordering story. The restaurant manager stated on his Facebook that the restaurant does not serve infants or young children because it brings too much trouble.

Mr. Akio Arima's drastic decision has caused a lot of controversy in Japan. However, the restaurant owner still reserves his decision, saying that he cannot accept the rude behavior and refusal to comply with restaurant rules of his compatriots. On the contrary, he has never had any problems with foreign customers.

It is currently unknown whether the restaurant will change its policy after September. However, for its regular Japanese customers (with membership cards), the restaurant will still operate as usual.
