How did International Men's Day November 19 come about?
In 1999, Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago), founded International Men's Day. He chose November 19 to honor his father and encourage people to work together to address issues affecting men and boys.
The idea quickly spread, being adopted by many countries such as Australia (2003) and India (2007). According to Internationalmensday.com, the need for a holiday to honor men can be traced back to the 1960s, inspired by International Women's Day on March 8.
International Men's Day focuses on raising awareness about men's health issues.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 45 in many countries. This day calls on the community to raise awareness about the mental and physical health of men, promoting comprehensive health care programs for men.
Men also face many barriers and stereotypes in society, such as the pressure of “toxic masculinity”, which negatively affects their psychology and behavior. International Men’s Day is an opportunity to discuss and address these issues, aiming for a society of equality and respect for all.
This day is also an occasion to recognize the important role of men in work, marriage, children's education, as well as their silent contributions to the overall development of family, community and society.
Modern society encourages men to express their emotions, share housework, and participate in childcare activities.
