Spring festivals in Europe

11/02/2016

Europe is beautiful and vibrant, with festivals that reflect the unique characteristics of each country.

"La fête du printemps"(France)

Visiting the magnificent capital in the early days of spring, tourists will better understand why the great writer Hemingway once wrote: "If you are lucky enough to live in Paris in your youth, then no matter where you go for the rest of your life, Paris will remain with you, for Paris is a never-ending celebration."

Spring brings many events such as Jazz festivals, fashion weeks, and street festivals throughout Paris. In a romantic atmosphere, visitors can leisurely stroll along the tranquil Seine River, enjoy themselves, shop for unique souvenirs at the spring festival "La fête du printemps," or visit the Île de la Cité flower market (in Lépine Square, near Notre Dame Cathedral). This place still retains the peaceful charm of the romantic city of love from the past.

The Île de la Cité flower market is a favorite spot for many Parisians because of its wide variety of flowers at affordable prices.

Carnival Venice (Italy)

Considered one of the world's most captivating spring festivals, the Venice Carnival transports visitors back to the golden age of the 15th-century aristocracy. Held annually in February, the festival brings moments of vibrant energy to the otherwise peaceful Venice. San Marco Square, theaters, and streets become stages for actors, dancers, and musicians. Elaborate costumes from the past are recreated to preserve Venice's unique beauty. Each mask depicts a different face—sometimes gentle, sometimes mysterious, sometimes simple, yet also alluring, challenging, and embodying a wealth of beauty and emotion.

If you want to experience the life of the aristocracy, you can visit the castles in Venice to attend all-night masquerade parties.

Maslenitsa (Russia)

The Netherlands is an ideal destination for travelers who want to admire the beauty of millions of spring flowers such as tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, and crocuses. Among them, the Keukenhof Gardens, spanning over 30 hectares, boasts the most vibrant springtime in the Netherlands. Flowers are planted amidst small forests or along rows of trees (up to 2,500 of which are perennial), along winding paths totaling 15 km, and beside meandering lakes where white swans gracefully glide across the water. The entire garden is fragrant with the scent of flowers, and bees and butterflies flutter about, offering visitors many delightful experiences.

Russia is famous for its many unique festivals that reflect the rich culture of the land of the White Birch. However, no folk festival here brings together as much joy and excitement as Maslenitsa, the communal festival that bids farewell to the cold winter and welcomes the cheerful spring.

During the festival, people celebrate wholeheartedly for a whole week because they believe that celebrating Maslenitsa in a gloomy way will bring bad luck and failure throughout the year. In the squares and fields near the forest, people build castles of ice and snow, effigies, Ferris wheels, and puppet stages. Everyone enthusiastically participates in or cheers on the competitions of strength and agility. Men and women sing folk songs together and hold hands while dancing in a circle.

Maslenitsa is also known by Russians as the pancake festival.

Besides the locations mentioned above, festivals celebrating the arrival of spring are also held in Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, and other countries.
