Early winter days in Queenstown

07/12/2019

The happiness of youth sometimes lies simply in immersing oneself in spontaneous yet adventurous journeys. And somewhere along my path, I discovered Queenstown – a beautiful town nestled in the southernmost part of New Zealand.

Queenstown stands out on the world travel map not only for its breathtaking, picturesque scenery, but also for its myriad of exciting activities, whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or a completely new travel experience.

About a two-hour flight from Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, Queenstown unfolded before my eyes through the airplane window, with its endless stretches of snow-capped mountains, beautiful houses perched on the slopes, and an equally enchanting and mystical atmosphere during the cold winter days. Throughout the short 10-kilometer journey from the airport to the town center, my heart skipped a beat countless times as the majestic mountain scenery gradually unfolded before me. Sharing a contented smile with other travelers, I realized that Queenstown was the paradise that travelers like me had been searching for.

Arriving in the town center just as dusk was falling, I took the opportunity to stroll through some of the ancient streets while waiting for my travel companion. Ms. Tram, currently a student living in Dunedine, a city more than 3 hours' drive from Queenstown, who has had the chance to enjoy the beauty of Queenstown in all four seasons, was very willing to be my "guide" here.

The first place Ms. Tram took me to was Saigon Kingdom restaurant, located right in the heart of the "Queen's Land". Enjoying the taste of Vietnamese food after a long time wandering around, we – young people with endless adventurous hearts – shared countless stories, both happy and sad, about our time abroad. On the way back to our guesthouse, we didn't forget to treat ourselves to a rich, creamy ice cream at Patagonia Chocolates, famous for its blend of traditional Italian ice cream flavors and distinctive South American tastes. Enjoying my favorite Hazelnut ice cream in the slightly cold weather amidst the vast landscape, what I felt most strongly was the overwhelming happiness of being alive, traveling, and experiencing.

With no prior itinerary, we decided to spend our time wandering through the town's streets, immersing ourselves in the romantic scenery that Queenstown offers to everyone. From the cobblestone streets stained with the patina of time, to the winding mountain passes, or the small paths leading to Lake Wakatipu surrounded by snow-capped mountains. From the harbor in the heart of town, seagulls soared against the deep blue sky in the brilliant afternoon sun, painting a scene that perhaps only in Queenstown can one fully appreciate every moment.

It would be a shame not to add some daring activities to your bucket list when visiting Queenstown, known as the adventure capital. Queenstown satisfies every thrill-seeking desire of youth, from skydiving, giving you the feeling of jumping from a plane thousands of meters high, to immersing yourself in a raging waterfall on a super-fast jet boat. After being encouraged by my travel companion, I decided to bet my courage on bungee jumping, simply because Queenstown was the first place to offer this activity commercially. To be honest, standing halfway up the cliff, I briefly regretted doing something so "terrible." But believe me, that feeling only lasts a few seconds – as soon as you freefall, adrenaline rushes through your veins, and don't forget to scream because you've just overcome your own fear!

If thrill-seeking activities aren't enough to satisfy your thirst for adventure, take a flight over hundreds of towering snow-capped peaks to Milford Sound, a true paradise nestled amidst rolling mountains, pristine forests, and majestic waterfalls. No matter how you arrive at Milford Sound, the journey is sure to be unforgettable, thanks to the unspoiled, magical beauty that the Maori have preserved, waiting for adventurous souls.

If food is a burning passion of yours, Fergburger is definitely a place you can't miss. Don't be discouraged by the long lines stretching down the street, because you're about to enjoy the best burger in the world. I believe Fergburger will change your perception of what a good burger is. A special feature is that the shop is open from 8 AM to 3 AM the following day, sure to meet the expectations of all diners.

Queenstown may not be the most perfect tourist destination you'll ever visit. But I believe that once you've strolled through its peaceful streets, gazed at the mountains rising against the deep blue sky, or seen the tranquil lake reflecting the sails billowing in the wind, you'll always find a reason to return, to once again let your soul wander with the seagulls, filled with freedom and happiness.
