Dubbed “unsinkable”, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, killing about 1,500 people.

The legendary Titanic will be rebuilt in China, with the hope of becoming a tourist attraction. The replica will be the same length as the original, at about 269 meters. The biggest difference with the “original” Titanic is that the replica will not sail. It will be located on the riverbank, at an amusement park in Sichuan province, about 1,000 kilometers from the sea.

To stay one night on the ship and enjoy 5-star service, visitors need to pay about 150 USD. SongMy Heart Will Go OnCéline Dion's song will be played on the tour. Everything from the dining room to the luxury cabins and doorknobs will be styled after the original Titanic. Amenities like banquet halls, theaters, observation decks and a swimming pool will also be recreated on board.

Inspired by James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic, the project's developer said he wants the replica to last 100 or 200 years, to preserve memories of the Titanic. He also hopes to welcome about 5 million visitors a year to visit the replica. However, an opening date has not yet been set.

The construction process will take about six years, longer than the Titanic itself. The plan is expected to require about 23,000 tons of steel, hundreds of workers and 1 billion yuan (about 153.5 million USD). “The greatest significance of building this ship is to continue and inherit the great spirit of Titanic. I will invite Jack, Rose and James Cameron to attend the inauguration ceremony,” the investor said.
