Saigon residents were surprised.

In recent days, many streets in Ho Chi Minh City have seen the return of the distinctive pink color of trumpet flowers – a species that typically blooms profusely from February to April each year.

According to reports, this flowering season was most noticeable starting from May 22nd. Many city residents said they were quite surprised because the trumpet flowers had bloomed profusely once before in March and seemed to have finished their season.

The pink trumpet flower (also known as the pink bellflower), scientifically named Tabebuia rosea, is a woody plant that has become quite popular in Ho Chi Minh City over the past 10 years. The tree usually sheds its leaves before flowering, creating dense and striking flower clusters against the sky.

Normally, the trees only bloom once a year. Therefore, the fact that many rows of trees continue to bloom a second time in mid-May is considered a rare phenomenon.

Why do trumpet flowers bloom a second time in a year?

According to many plant enthusiasts and local sources, this year's second bloom may be related to weather fluctuations during the transitional period between seasons.

Following a prolonged heatwave in early May, Ho Chi Minh City experienced early seasonal rains interspersed with high temperatures. This change in humidity and temperature may stimulate plants to bud again in some areas.

A distinctive feature of the trumpet vine is its relatively short flowering period. A beautiful bloom typically lasts only about one to two weeks, or even shorter if there is heavy rain or strong winds. Therefore, many people take advantage of the early morning or late afternoon hours to admire the flowers before the petals begin to fall.

When it comes to the trumpet flower season in Ho Chi Minh City, Dien Bien Phu Street remains the most popular destination. The rows of trees lining the street, especially near the Hang Xanh roundabout towards Dien Bien Phu Bridge, bloom simultaneously, creating a striking pink spectacle amidst the bustling traffic. The most popular spot is the overpass crossing the road. From above, you can capture both the pink trumpet flowers and the continuous movement of the streets below. This view is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sunlight filters through the trees, adding depth to the image.

The area around Cong Ly Bridge and Nhieu Loc Canal is also a popular spot for viewing flowers, thanks to the water reflecting the pink blossoms. In the early morning or late afternoon, the flowers blooming alongside the trees lining the canal, combined with the calm water, create a very cinematic view, perfect for strolling and taking candid photos.

Right in the city center, the pink trumpet trees on Le Loi Street offer a gentle splash of color amidst the modern urban landscape. Between the rows of buildings, the metro line, and the stream of people passing by, the soft pink becomes a striking visual highlight, making many passersby stop and look.

Vo Thi Sau Street is also one of the streets with many beautiful pink trumpet trees in bloom this season. The large canopies and thick layers of flowers covering the existing rows of tamarind trees and green areas of the street create a rather characteristic scene of Saigon during the transition to summer.

In the southern part of the city, Wonderland Park (Phu My Hung, Tan Hung and Tan My wards) has become a popular spot for families and young people to visit and admire the flowers in recent days. The spacious, green areas, combined with clusters of blooming trumpet flowers, make it a favorite backdrop for photos taken during the flower season.

Besides the familiar spots, pink trumpet flowers are also appearing sporadically on many other streets in Ho Chi Minh City this year. In some places, only a few trees are in full bloom in the middle of a street, not enough to constitute a "season," but enough to become a very beautiful visual highlight for the urban landscape.

Wonderland Park is home to the largest concentration and most abundant bloom of pink trumpet flowers.

Amidst the concrete, glass, and hustle and bustle of the city, sometimes just a late-blooming pink trumpet flower on the sidewalk is enough to make an entire street corner feel calmer.

The trumpet flower is not a long-lasting bloom. Each season lasts only a short time before its petals quickly fall to the ground. Perhaps that's why, whenever it appears, this flower always attracts Saigonese people to the streets.

The second bloom in mid-May this year is even more special as it arrived at a time few expected. Not as vibrant as the first bloom, but enough to soften many familiar streets of Ho Chi Minh City with a soft pink hue.

And for those who missed the March cherry blossom season, this could be a rare opportunity to see "Saigon's cherry blossom season" once again.
