Based on information from the Bangkok Post and the Department of Disease Control (DDC) of Thailand, the COVID-19 situation in Thailand is showing noteworthy developments in 2025. Specifically, between January 1st and May 10th, the country recorded a total of 53,676 COVID-19 infections, along with 16 deaths.
Notably, detailed reports from the DDC show a significant increase in the week of May 4th to 10th with 16,607 new confirmed cases. This represents an escalation compared to the previous week, when there were 14,680 cases. The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that the number of deaths this week doubled, reaching 6 cases compared to 3 cases the previous week.

Bangkok has been identified as the hotspot of this outbreak, with a total of 16,723 infections in 2025. Health experts believe that the XBB.1.16 subvariant of Omicron is the main cause of this rapid spread in Bangkok.

The majority of recorded cases present with only mild symptoms. Previously, the Thai Minister of Public Health had also urged people to remain calm and not panic over concerns about a potential resurgence of the disease, emphasizing that COVID-19 is now considered a common infectious disease.
