Visit Thanh An Island to find peace.

17/06/2021

Thanh An Island isn't a popular tourist destination; it's simply a day getaway if city life is making you feel tired.

Thanh An Island is an island commune belonging to Can Gio District, located 70 km east of Ho Chi Minh City center. It's an ideal destination for those who love peaceful, rural life, free from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, visitors can explore pristine natural areas and experience the warm welcome of friendly and hospitable fishermen.

Thanh An Island has an area of approximately 131 square kilometers.2 With a population of approximately 5,000, this area was once considered a crucial gateway to Saigon - Gia Dinh. The island lies between two major rivers: the Thi Vai River and the Long Tau River. This was also the logistical base of the 10th Rung Sac Special Forces Unit in the past.

Due to its geographical isolation, life here remains difficult. The people of this poor island commune still rely entirely on fishing, salt production, and forest management for their livelihood.

a Day Trip Destination

Thanh An is not a popular tourist destination. It doesn't boast stunning scenery perfect for Instagram photos. In fact, visitors come to Thanh An seeking peace and quiet, to experience the simple life with the friendly fishermen who always have a smile on their faces.

Because the island is still unspoiled and undeveloped for tourism, there are no guesthouses or hotels. Most visitors come here for a day trip. However, recently, due to the increasing number of visitors, many households on the island have opened budget-friendly homestay services.

Fresh and delicious seafood

The main attraction of Thanh An Island is its seafood. Tourists can buy seafood directly from fishermen as soon as their boats dock and then ask locals to prepare it for them, or they can request the owner of their accommodation to buy and prepare it for them. Although not as abundant as in Can Gio, the seafood on Thanh An Island is always fresh and delicious because it's just caught, and the prices are quite reasonable. Must-try seafood includes oysters, crabs, mussels, and other shellfish.

Besides seafood at the market, the island also sells snacks such as: noodle soup, pho, rice noodle soup, steamed bread, grilled chicken feet, skewers, grilled yellowtail fish, grilled rice paper, grilled bananas, etc.

Not as famous for its delicious food as Binh Ba or boasting the breathtaking scenery of many other islands, Thanh An offers its own unique beauty as a peaceful island commune, suitable for those who want to find a quiet, fresh atmosphere, away from the dust and noise of the city.

There are two different ferry docks on the island, so you might arrive at two different locations for the trip there and back. It's advisable to ask the locals beforehand to find the ferry. However, Saturdays and Sundays tend to be crowded, so visitors should arrive at the dock about 30 minutes early to avoid missing the ferry.
