The National Gallery Singapore will be hosting its first-ever Gallery Children's Biennale, featuring artwork aimed at children, under the theme “Why Art Matters”. Art by Vietnamese artist Dinh Q Le will also be showcased at the event.

The Gallery Children's Biennale, held every two years, began its third edition on May 22, 2021, featuring artwork by nine renowned artists and groups: Dinh Q Le (Vietnam), artist couple Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan (Philippines/Australia), Jeremy Sharma (Singapore), Joyce Ho (Taiwan - China), Khvay Samnang (Cambodia), Nandita Mukand (Singapore/India), Nona Garcia (Philippines), Sandra Lee (Singapore), and Speak Cryptic X ADDADDADD (Singapore).

With its hybrid online and in-person format, the exhibition is expected to offer audiences many new ways to enjoy art, from creating "digital artwork" with just a swipe of a finger to exploring the works on display in a live setting.

This hybrid exhibition format also helps foster connections between children and artists during a period of limited in-person interaction. The majority of online works allow children to collaborate creatively with established international artists.

This year's Gallery Children's Biennale exhibition features four main themes: Homeland, Diversity, Time, and Environment, with works aimed at inspiring children to embrace the values of acceptance, openness, and diversity, while providing young audiences with a space to unleash their creativity.

Vietnamese artist Dinh Q Le participated in the Diversity theme, presenting his work “Voices From The Centers,” which allows young audiences to learn how to create a 60-second video responding to an artwork in the national collection, using a “digital weaving” technique inspired by Dinh Q Le’s signature “photo weaving” style.
