The National Gallery of Singapore will host its first-ever children-focused art exhibition, the Gallery Children’s Biennale, with the theme “Why Art Matters.” Works by Vietnamese artist Dinh Q. Le will also be featured at the event.

The third biennial Gallery Children's Biennale exhibition, which starts on May 22, 2021, features artworks by nine renowned artists and artist groups: Dinh Q Le (Vietnam), artist couple Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan (Philippines/Australia), Jeremy Sharma (Singapore), Joyce Ho (Taiwan - China), Khvay Samnang (Cambodia), Nandita Mukand (Singapore/India), Nona Garcia (Philippines), Sandra Lee (Singapore) and Speak Cryptic X ADDADDADD (Singapore).

With a combination of online and offline formats, the exhibition is expected to bring audiences more new ways to enjoy art, from creating “digital artworks” with just a swipe of a finger to exploring the works displayed vividly at the exhibition.

This hybrid exhibition format also contributes to promoting the connection between children and artists during a period of maximum restrictions on face-to-face activities. Most of the online works allow children to co-create with established international artists.

This year's Gallery Children's Biennale exhibition has four main themes including Homeland, Diversity, Time and Environment, with works aiming to inspire children to embrace the values of acceptance, openness and diversity, while providing young audiences with space to unleash their creativity.

Vietnamese artist Dinh Q Le participated in the Diversity theme, bringing “Voices From The Centers” which allowed young audiences to learn how to create a 60-second video in response to an artwork in the national collection, through the use of a “digital weaving” technique inspired by Dinh Q Le’s signature “photo weaving” style.

The exhibition's online art experiences will take place from May 22, 2021 to December 2022 at the website:www.childrensbiennale.com, allowing children's arts programming to be accessible to the public everywhere.

The National Gallery Singapore is expected to open its doors to the public in September 2020 for a live viewing of the works on display at the Gallery Children's Biennale.
