On the afternoon of September 13th, the People's Committee of Co To district announced that from September 15th, 2023, Co To district will continue implementing phase 2 of the project to make Co To island district plastic-free (referred to as Project 175), which involves piloting a mandatory requirement for all passengers not to bring plastic bags and single-use plastic items to the island.

Previously, from September 1, 2022 to the present, the People's Committee of Co To district has implemented phase 1 of Project 175, which is a pilot program advising all passengers not to bring plastic bags and single-use plastic items to Co To.

After a year of piloting, the awareness, habits, and behaviors of the people and tourists in protecting the marine and island environment have undergone many positive changes and transformations, with a noticeable improvement in their awareness.

The marine environment is being initially protected, and some species such as turtles, green seagulls, albatrosses, dolphins, etc., have returned to live on the island, which is a very encouraging sign.
