Mount Kilimanjaro is located in the heart of Kilimanjaro National Park. It is one of the world's largest volcanoes and the highest in Africa. Kilimanjaro has three main volcanic peaks: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Surrounding the base of the mountain is a belt of forest rich in flora and fauna, especially mammals.
Kilimanjaro National Park, surrounding the mountain, was established in 1973, expanded in 2005, and now covers approximately 75,575 hectares. The national park, and especially Mount Kilimanjaro, is a popular tourist destination in Tanzania.
Each year, around 50,000 tourists climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzania plans to build a cable car to the summit to double the number of visitors. However, this idea has been controversial from the outset. Currently, a single climber may have up to 15 people serving them, including 13 porters, a cook, and a guide. A cable car would result in the loss of jobs for approximately 20,000 people.

Tanzania's tourism revenue increased by 7.13% last year thanks to a rise in visitor numbers, reaching $2.43 billion, up from $2.19 billion in 2017.
