The 2014 United Nations Vesak Celebration took place at Bai Dinh Pagoda, Ninh Binh province from May 8-10, 2014. Approximately 1,500 delegates from 100 countries and territories were expected to attend, along with around 8,500 delegates, monks, and Buddhist followers from within Vietnam. The theme of the 2014 Vesak Celebration was "Buddhism's Contribution to Achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals." This year's celebration aimed to strengthen relations between the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Buddhist Sanghas and traditions worldwide, demonstrate Vietnam's responsibility to the United Nations, introduce Vietnam's people, culture, history, and Buddhist culture, develop spiritual tourism potential, promote Ninh Binh tourism, and advocate for the recognition of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex as a World Natural Heritage Site by the world and UNESCO.
This year, in addition to the logistical support for the Vesak Grand Ceremony assigned by the Vietnam Buddhist Association, Vietravel is also implementing many side tour programs to serve the large number of domestic and international delegates, monks, and Buddhists attending this important event.
