According to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports, in the first five months of 2024, a total of 391,271 Vietnamese tourists visited Thailand. Of these, January saw 155,400 visitors, February 75,013, March 78,913, April 81,699, and May 100,246. Vietnam is considered one of the countries with the highest number of tourists visiting Thailand.
The Thai newspaper Thairath also reported some noteworthy figures. During the pandemic in 2022, Thailand still welcomed 458,789 Vietnamese tourists. In that year, Vietnamese people spent a total of approximately US$451 million (VND 11.403 trillion) traveling in Thailand. They were divided into two groups: those who opted for package tours and those who did not.
Vietnamese tourists have been among the top visitors to Thailand in recent years.
Total spending by Vietnamese tourists in Thailand in 2022 reached US$451 million, equivalent to over VND 11,403 billion. The average spending per Vietnamese tourist in Thailand was approximately US$984 (about VND 23 million). This figure is significantly higher than the average spending of tourists from other Southeast Asian countries.
Many destinations have become so familiar to Vietnamese tourists that they jokingly call "Thailand their second home" because of the number of times they've visited and returned. Thailand and Vietnam share many similarities in culture, cuisine, and customs. Therefore, Vietnamese tourists find it easy to integrate when visiting Thailand.
Compared to other international tourist destinations, Thailand offers relatively reasonable travel costs, making it affordable for many Vietnamese tourists. At the same time, Thailand is always attractive to Vietnamese people because it boasts many attractions such as ancient temples, bustling shopping districts, beautiful beaches, and numerous exciting recreational activities.
With tourism as its primary development focus, Thailand is implementing various policies to support this "smokeless industry."
Most Vietnamese tourists visiting Thailand usually travel in groups of friends or family, staying for 2-3 days. Tourists tend to choose independent travel, but some also opt for guided tours due to convenience and the appeal of new tourist destinations.
With its cultural and geographical advantages and reasonable travel costs, Thailand has always been an attractive destination for Vietnamese tourists. The fact that Vietnam is among the highest-spending tourists in Thailand shows the enormous potential for cooperation and tourism development between the two countries.
To achieve this goal, the Thai government has continuously introduced new policies to provide timely support to the industry. Recently, from July 15th, Thailand officially waived visa requirements for citizens from 93 countries and territories, allowing them to stay for up to 60 days without needing a visa. Vietnamese tourists are also among those who benefit from this policy.
