Currently, Japan is one of the most important international tourist markets for Vietnam. The number of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam is constantly increasing, ranking third among international tourist markets to Vietnam, after China and South Korea. Therefore, promoting Vietnamese tourism in Japanese cities is essential, contributing to the increase in the number of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam in the future.
Japanese tourists visit Hoi An ancient town (Quang Nam province), one of Vietnam's attractive tourist destinations.
According to statistics from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in 2018, Vietnam welcomed 826,674 Japanese tourists, an increase of 3.6% compared to 2017. After the first seven months of 2019, the number of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam also increased by 12.9%. Some of Vietnam's tourist destinations that attract Japanese tourists include Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, the cluster of destinations including Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An, Nha Trang, and the Mekong Delta. The types of tourism products favored by Japanese tourists in Vietnam are cultural experiences, world heritage sites, and beach resorts.
While the growth rate of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam is not yet high, it is stable. In some years, such as 2013, 2014, and 2015, the number of international tourists to Vietnam decreased sharply, but the number of Japanese tourists continued to grow at an average rate of about 8% per year. With the current growth rate, it is projected that Vietnam will welcome 1 million Japanese tourists by 2020.
