After becoming a hot item in Thailand, mango sticky rice is being nominated by the country's Department of Cultural Promotion to become an intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.

Mango sticky rice, one of the typical dishes of the Golden Temple country, has suddenly become popular in Bangkok and many cities in Thailand. The reason for this fever is because Thai rapper Danupha Kanateerakul, known by his stage name “Milli”, enjoyed the traditional Thai dessert right on stage, during his performance last weekend at the Coachella music festival.

Thai rapper Milli enjoyed mango sticky rice during her performance at Coachella last weekend.

A mango sticky rice shop owner at Simum Muang Market (Bangkok) shared that normally every day she sells a 20kg box of mangoes and about 10 bags of cooked sticky rice. But after Milli's performance, the number of orders skyrocketed, forcing her to peel 4 more boxes of mangoes to meet the daily demand.

Shortly after, the Thai Department of Cultural Promotion announced that it had prepared a dossier to nominate this dish for the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Mr. Chai Nakornchai, head of the Thai Department of Cultural Promotion, said that this phenomenon had happened with skewered meatballs sold at a shop in Buriram province in northeastern Thailand. This dish also "sold out" after Thai singer Lisa, a member of the Korean girl group BLACKPINK, a native of Buriram, said that she liked to eat meatballs at this shop.

Made from the famous fragrant Thai rice, the sticky rice grains are soft, rich, and slightly sweet, not too strong, combined with the ripe, sweet Thai mango. All combined with a little bit of rich, fragrant coconut milk to create a dessert that easily conquers all diners.
