Two young Vietnamese directors win UNESCO short film award

Two directors Nguyen Trung Nghia and Dang Thao Nguyen received a short film prize of 2,000 USD (about 45 million VND) and were sponsored to make a film, after the UNESCO On The Reel Film Lab film production course.

On the morning of October 27, the UNESCO On The Reel Film Lab course for aspiring filmmakers concluded. Three outstanding projects were selected and awarded practical prizes to help complete the film to the best of their ability.

Specifically, the project “Mulberry fields” (A single unfinished project) by Nguyen Trung Nghia received 2,000 USD along with a camera and lighting equipment package from sponsor HKFilm; the project “Memory replica” (Memory replica) by Dang Thao Nguyen received 2,000 USD along with a sound post-production package from sponsor Wallsound Post Production. The remaining project, “Little tomb on the prairie” (Ideal tomb) by producer, director, and screenwriter Nguyen Le Hoang Phuc - received a camera and lighting equipment package from HKFilm.

Winning projects must commit to completion within the next year.

On The Reel Film Lab is a short film production course organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Center for Supporting and Developing Cinema Talents (TPD) - Vietnam Cinema Association. The course took place in October under the guidance of director Pham Ngoc Lan and producer Pimpaka Towira.

There were 100 submissions and 6 projects were selected to participate in the course. Each project received individual consultation from lecturer Pham Ngoc Lan or guest Truong Minh Quy. Next, producer Pimpaka Towira shared about the international film industry and film production skills. At the end of the course, students presented their projects and three outstanding projects were selected to receive awards.

On The Reel Film Lab is organized to support young filmmakers to have an overview of Vietnamese and world cinema, the international film festival system, and filmmaking trends. Through the course, young filmmakers can improve their skills and professionalism, learn about the production process, and receive advice from experienced filmmakers.
