He could not hide his joy as he was about to experience the traditional Kecak dance.

“Perched on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, the Kecak performance takes place at sunset. What makes Kecak special is that it does not use any artificial setting or musical instruments. The focus is on 60 men wearing only sarongs, singing in unison.Cak Cak Cak. It is that sound that brings endless energy to the climax of the show" - photographer Bao Khanh shared his experience when witnessing the fire dance to welcome the sunset of the Balinese people.

Kecak dance is essentially a folk dance drama, based on the Hindu legend of Ramayana. Kecak is a dance that does not use music or light, but only has the harmony of the local choir. Kecak became popular in Bali in the 30s, and has been gradually edited and supplemented over the years. This is one of the most popular shows for tourists on this island.

The sound was produced by an “orchestra” of about 60 men. They sat cross-legged around the stage, divided into two wings, sometimes facing the audience, sometimes sitting behind the actors. There were no elaborate costumes, all members were shirtless and wrapped in black and white striped sarongs, the traditional dress of the people of Bali.

The entire play took place under the light of fire. The stage was very simple, a square yard. The play lasted for more than two hours, from the time the sun began to set until the night fell. The end of the play was also the thing the audience was waiting for the most: the actors playing the roles of demons and gods performed a dance on the fire in the middle of the stage. They walked barefoot on the fire, rolled around in the fire with full costumes of the characters, but did not catch fire at all.
