The mystery of the pink lake in Australia.

10/10/2013

Unlike the usual white or blue, Lake Hillier attracts tourists with its rare pink color. Lake Hillier is a pink lake located on Middle Island, the largest of the islands in the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. From above, Lake Hillier looks like an inflated bubble of chewing gum, which makes it truly unique.

When the sunlight shines on it, the lake's surface becomes even more shimmering and captivating than ever before.

The lake is approximately 600 meters long, surrounded by a strip of sand and a dense forest of Paperbark and eucalyptus trees. A narrow strip of sand covered with vegetation separates the lake from the southern sea.

Unlike other pink lakes around the world, such as Lake Retba and the salt lake in San Francisco Bay, scientists have yet to determine the cause of Hillier's pink color. However, many scientists speculate that the lake's pink color is created by the organisms Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. Another hypothesis suggests it's due to a type of red bacteria in the salt crust. The color is also not a result of sunlight, as a bucket of water taken from the lake retains its pink hue even when moved.

The distinctive pink color of Lake Hillier remains a mystery that no scientist has yet been able to explain.

Except for a few years when locals mined salt here, the island and the pink lake have remained almost untouched. The lake offers visitors a truly spectacular sight, a natural wonder of the world.

Besides Hillier, there are several other unique pink lakes around the world, such as: Lake Retba (also known as Lac Rose), located in the north of the Cap Vert peninsula, northeast of Dakar, Senegal; Salina de Torrevieja and La Salina de La Mata, two salt lakes surrounding Torrevieja, a coastal city in southeastern Spain; Dusty Rose Lake, located in British Columbia, Canada, which has peculiar characteristics. Although the lake contains no salt or algae, the water is still pink; and Masazirgol (also known as Lake Masazir), a salt lake in the Qaradag region, near Baku, Azerbaijan.
