1. Avoid Manhattan because it's quite expensive, with the average hotel room costing $250 per day. Unless you really want to stay in a famous hotel like the Waldorf-Astoria, you should choose Brooklyn because there are many elegant and affordable hotels there, and it's only a little over 20 minutes by train to the city center.
2. Don't take a taxi here as you'll likely encounter traffic jams and have difficulty getting out of downtown Manhattan. Instead, take advantage of public transportation. The subway will take you anywhere you want to go. If the weather is good, you can use Citi Bike – NewYour bike-sharing program.
3. Don't book overpriced bus tours because they usually only offer you the most brief glimpses of the attractions. Instead, reach your favorite spots via bike or walking tours; it might not be cheaper, but you'll get to see more than you expect.
4. Don't shop on Fifth Avenue or Broadway (the upscale shopping districts) because the stores there aren't particularly unique, and you can find brands like those anywhere in the United States. Go to the Lower East Side; you'll find everything you need and you'll be satisfied.

5. Don't queue for a cronut, as you might waste an entire day there. Why not have a doughnut instead? They're just as delicious and widely available.
6. Avoid the crowds at modern art museums, especially on weekends, because while you might find some of the city's best cultural experiences there, it's not worth the strain. Go to one of the other interesting museums instead.
7. Avoid the Empire State Building; although you get amazing views from the top, you have to pay $30 and wait a long time for your turn. Instead, go to Brooklyn Bridge Park for equally stunning skyline views.
8. Don't go to Times Square because it's just a symbolic tourist spot; there's nothing to do there. Go to the High Line instead; there's plenty to see and it attracts thousands of visitors every day.

9. Avoid trendy bars in the Meatpacking district because you might get yelled at for a bottle of drink and it's too noisy and chaotic. Instead, go to the city's best cocktail bars to enjoy the drinks and admire the beautiful atmosphere.
10. Avoid street fast food or Dollar Slices (a type of pizza) because they are not very clean; although attractive and cheap, they are not tasty. You should go to Williamsburg Food Market to enjoy the food of local street vendors with its unique and delicious flavors.
