The project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge was approved by the People's Committee of Hoi An City on December 28, 2022, with a budget of more than 20 billion VND. Previously, the relic had undergone seven restorations. By 2022, the Japanese Covered Bridge had seriously degraded with the bridge abutments and piers cracked and sunken; many columns and beams were damaged. The restoration process lasted more than a year longer than originally planned due to many controversies about whether the bridge surface was "curved or straight" and related architecture. The Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation had to temporarily suspend the restoration work for careful research.
Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center said that the restoration of the Japanese Covered Bridge has completed all important items such as the foundation, foundation, piers, piers; floor system, wooden frame, roof; electrical system and termite protection for the project. Currently, the unit is dismantling scaffolding, roofing, landscape restoration and cleaning to hand over the site, creating convenience for visitors.
The Japanese Covered Bridge has completed all important items.
During the restoration period from late 2022 to early August 2024, although the Japanese Covered Bridge is still open to visitors, the main items of the construction are covered by scaffolding to ensure the safety of visitors and construction workers. This prevents visitors from fully admiring the unique architecture of the Japanese Covered Bridge.
As planned, the Japanese Covered Bridge will be inaugurated on August 3, in the series of events of the 20th Hoi An - Japan cultural exchange in 2024.
The restoration project has contributed to preserving and enhancing the unique cultural heritage value of the Japanese Covered Bridge, while also meeting the needs of tourists. The reopening of the Japanese Covered Bridge marks an important milestone in the conservation of cultural heritage in Hoi An. This is also a great joy for local people and tourists, promising to attract a large number of visitors in the near future.
