In 2016, an Austrian airline launched a direct flight from St Gallen-Altenrhein Airport (Switzerland) to Friedrichshafen Airport (Germany). In reality, passengers only fly across the two shores of Lake Constance, a distance of approximately 20km, with a total flight time of 8 minutes. This is why it became the shortest international flight in the world.

If traveling by road, visitors have to walk 75km from one side of the lake to the other. If taking the ferry, the journey takes 1.5 hours. The airfare for this route is approximately 46 USD.
Previously, the world's shortest international flight was the Vienna-Bratislava route, connecting the capitals of Austria and Slovakia in approximately 10 minutes.

Most passengers on this flight are locals, healthcare workers, etc. Papa Westray is home to over 70 people and boasts 60 archaeological sites.
