The Guardian Travel Photography Competition offers a chance to see some of the most mundane images from around the world. Sometimes, the best photos come from the simplest things in life.

Dukha is the name given to reindeer herders in Mongolia. They live in the mountains and live in Native American tents. The woman in the photo is a single mother, now a grandmother. She is taking care of a herd of more than 50 reindeer. This photo won first prize in the monthly photo contest. Not only is it beautiful in structure and water, it also tells a story, a life, showing the photographer's unique perspective and the lifestyle of the subject of the photo. Photo: Eloise Campbell.

A family in a Kolkata market. The author took this photo very quickly, without much preparation. That is why we can see the surprise on the woman's face. Photo: George Turnbull
