Stunning photos from the 2018 Travel Photography Contest.

National Geographic's annual photo contest always brings viewers the most vivid and authentic images of nature and the animal world. This year's contest has begun revealing the impressive photos submitted by photographers early on. The contest will run until the end of May, and we're sure to see many more amazing works.

American photographer Naresh Balaguru captured this stunning image when he saw a rainbow across the Grand Canyon. He said, “As the sun rose, a storm was gathering on the southern edge and I was preparing to pack my bags. Suddenly, the sky brightened for a brief moment, creating this breathtaking image. This was my first trip to the Grand Canyon. The scenery was so beautiful that I was speechless and just kept taking pictures.”

Photographer Hiroki Inoue captured stunning images of cherry blossoms in full bloom one evening in Nakameguro, Tokyo.

Italian photographer Enrico Pescantini captured images of the Teotihuacan archaeological site in Mexico. He said, “This third-largest pyramid in the world was dedicated to the sun god. Its geometric perfection inspires admiration for the civilization that created it. This magnificent architecture seems even larger when compared to the tiny human figures in the frame. Though small, humans are the creators of this wonder.”

Malaysian photographer Khai Chuin Sim took this photo in Kenya. He recounted, “I arrived at Masai Mara National Park very early to witness the great migration. I spotted a rhino in the distance, standing next to a tree. The sunlight behind it was so strong that I decided to photograph its shadow.”

Nitish Thakus, an Indian photographer, captures images of herdsmen in the Himalayas. He says, “The goats carry the necessary supplies for the journey. The sheepdogs have collars to protect them from leopards or bears.”

Mattia Passarini, who lives in China, once lived near the Mundari cattle-herding tribe in South Sudan. “The Mundari are one of the most famous cattle-herding tribes. They move their herds to pastures during the dry season and return to their rainforest settlements during the rainy season.”

The Sol de Managa underground spring was captured in the early morning by Hong Kong photographer King Hi Antony Tang. He said, “I was impressed by this spectacular scenery, the beautiful soil texture, and the unique atmosphere. I am very happy to share this unforgettable moment with everyone.”

Lava drifted into the sea after a volcanic eruption in Bolivia. Photographer Tetsuya Nomura said, “The explosion happened and plumes of smoke appeared. My camera lens started to be covered in a haze.”

Hideyuki Katagiri took this photograph of the Enoshima Railway off the coast of Japan. The railway serves as a trade route between Kamakura and Fujisawa prefectures. He recounted, "The Enoshima Railway runs through a shopping district. There are many people and vehicles passing by throughout the day. In the early morning, when the first train slowly departs, the railway, glistening with rainwater, looks remarkably bright."
