Stunning photos from the 2018 Travel Photo Contest

National Geographic's annual photo contest always brings viewers the most vivid and authentic photos of nature and the animal world. This year's photo contest has begun to reveal the impressive photos that photographers sent to the program the earliest. The contest will last until the end of May, we will certainly admire many other wonderful works.

American photographer Naresh Balaguru captured this stunning image when he saw a rainbow over the Grand Canyon. “As the sun was rising, a storm was rolling in on the south rim and I was getting ready to pack my gear. Suddenly the sky cleared up for a brief moment, creating this beautiful image. It was my first trip to the Grand Canyon. The view was so beautiful that I couldn’t help but click the shutter,” he said.

Photographer Hiroki Inoue captured beautiful cherry blossoms in full bloom one evening in Nakameguro, Tokyo.

Italian photographer Enrico Pescantini took this photo of the Teotihuacan archaeological site in Mexico. “The world’s third largest pyramid, dedicated to the Sun God, is so perfect in its geometry that one can only marvel at the civilization that created it. The grand structure is magnified by the small human figure in the frame. Although small, man is the architect of this wonder,” he said.

Malaysian photographer Khai Chuin Sim took this photo in Kenya. He said, “I arrived at Masai Mara National Park early to watch the Great Migration. I saw a rhino in the distance, standing next to a tree. The backlight of the sun was so strong that I decided to take a photo of its silhouette.”

Nitish Thakus, an Indian photographer who photographs herders in the Himalayas, says, “The goats carry the essentials for the journey. The shepherd dogs are collared to protect them from leopards and bears.”

Mattia Passarini, who lives in China, spent time with the Mundari herding tribe in South Sudan. “The Mundari are one of the most famous herding tribes. They move their herds to pasture during the dry season and return to their rainforest settlements during the rainy season.”

The Sol de Managua spring in the early morning was captured by Hong Kong photographer King Hi Antony Tang. He said, “I was impressed by the breathtaking scenery, the beautiful soil texture and the strange atmosphere. I am so happy to share this unforgettable moment with everyone.”

Lava flows into the ocean after a volcanic eruption in Bolivia. Photographer Tetsuya Nomura says, “The explosion happened and smoke billowed out. My camera lens started to fog up.”

Hideyuki Katagiri took this photo of the Enoshima Railway off the coast of Japan. The railway is a commercial hub for Kamakura and Fujisawa districts. He said, "The Enoshima Railway runs through the shopping district. There are many people and cars passing by during the day. Early in the morning, when the first train runs slowly, the railway looks very shiny after the rain."
