The Guardian Travel Photo Contest Results

In 2017, thousands of photos were submitted by readers from around the world to The Guardian’s photo competition. Here are the best pictures from each month. The overall winner won a wildlife holiday for two to Costa Rica.

First Prize – September Photo of the Month - Eric Etchart

Second Prize – October Photo of the Month - Coltrane Koh

A gym with basic equipment in Varanasi, India. While photographer Coltrane Koh was trying to capture a young man in great shape working out, an older man accidentally walked into the frame.

Third Prize - Best Photo of July - John Birch

This dramatic opportunity was created by a combination of high tides and strong winds at Sandsend, North Yorkshire. The photographer was hit from behind by a wave as he attempted to capture this moment of nature.

Third Prize – August Photo of the Month - Doug Scott

Buddhist monks in Trongsa Monastery, Bhutan, a wonderful composition. Interestingly, the author noticed that they cover their heads to secretly use their smartphones.

January's Best Photo - John Birch

Despite the temptation to seek shelter for himself, photographer John Birch spent hours photographing a colony of Gentoo penguins on Saunders Island, Falkands, as they plodded through wind and sand to return to their nests.

February's Best Photo - Nick Board

On Christmas Eve in Patagonia, Nick Board had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get close to the Perito Moreno glacier and enjoy a whisky with some ice from the Perito Moreno glacier itself – the purest ice on Earth.

Photo of the Month for March - Stanislav Shmelev

A woman in traditional dress from Carthagena, Colombia, in one of Spain’s most fortified ports. By capturing the moment when the old and the new – traditional dress and mobile phone – collide, the author attempts to convey the irony of the tourism boom in Cartagena.

April's Best Picture - Christopher Wilton-Steer

These men string marigolds in Veraval, Gujarat. The fluorescent lighting makes the scene look like a painting. “I love photographing shop fronts, especially in India, as it often gives me the feeling of looking into a window into another world,” says photographer Christopher Wilton Steer.

Photo of the Month for May - Sam Germaine Scriven

Koh Muk, Southern Thailand, Sam Germaine Scrivens saw the boats gliding in the wind and thought it would look cool from a different angle.

June's Best Picture - Douglas Stewart

Best Photo of November - Kelly Beckta

The photo was taken in a Soho cafe on a rainy London day. The customers inside and the man smoking on the terrace all seemed to be having different stories.
