Da Nang attracts more tourists than Phuket and Bali.

That's the assessment of Nikkei Asian Review in an article about the Vietnamese coastal city. According to the prestigious Japanese newspaper, more than 40 years after the end of the war in Vietnam, Da Nang is developing remarkably, especially in tourism, and has become one of the most attractive destinations in Asia in general and Southeast Asia in particular.

Unlike Phuket in Thailand and Bali in Indonesia, Da Nang is not an island. Vietnam's third-largest city attracts tourists, especially Chinese and Korean visitors, with its luxurious and convenient hotel system. Furthermore, Da Nang's airport and beaches are very close to the city center, providing convenience for tourists. In December 2018, the Hilton Da Nang officially opened, joining the Intercontinental and Hyatt Regency as upscale hotels serving tourists visiting Da Nang.

Da Nang is attractive not only for its convenience and good security but also because this coastal city in central Vietnam is not as heavily impacted by natural disasters as tourist destinations in Thailand and Indonesia. Remember, in the summer of 2018, a sudden storm hit Phuket and sank a cruise ship, killing 47 Chinese tourists. In Bali, Indonesia, the Agung volcano erupted in 2017, causing many flight cancellations and stranding tourists.

According to statistics from the Da Nang City Department of Tourism, the number of hotel rooms in Da Nang has tripled in the past five years. During the same period, the number of domestic and international tourists visiting Da Nang has surged by approximately 2.5 times. In 2018, Da Nang attracted around 7.6 million tourists, including a large number from China and South Korea. This number is still modest compared to Phuket and Bali (only one-third to one-half), but with the current growth rate, it is entirely possible that Da Nang will surpass these competitors in the future.

A 45-year-old South Korean tourist shared: “I’ve been to Da Nang twice and I really love this beautiful coastal city. For about $300 and 5 hours, I can fly from Seoul to Da Nang to admire the scenery here.” Da Nang is even closer to China, making travel very convenient. For many Chinese tourists, Da Nang resembles Hainan Island in many ways, but the cost of living and food here are cheaper and more appealing.

In the past, Da Nang was famous for its involvement in wars. In 1858, the French attacked Da Nang, marking the beginning of their invasion of Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, the United States built an airport, seaport, and important military facilities in Da Nang. In 1965, Da Nang was the first place where American troops landed in Vietnam. Now, in the country's development, Da Nang continues to make a significant impact. In the 2018 ranking of trending travel destinations by Airbnb (USA), the world's largest hotel booking website, Da Nang ranked 5th globally and first in Southeast Asia.

Unlike Hanoi and Saigon, Da Nang is more peaceful, cleaner, and doesn't yet face the problem of traffic congestion. Furthermore, Da Nang is very close to other attractive tourist destinations such as Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, and the Hue Imperial Citadel complex (all World Heritage sites), making it very convenient for tourists to visit and explore.

Da Nang will continue to develop even more strongly in the future as the central and local governments continue to implement preferential policies for domestic and international investors, working together to develop the city to a new level.
