According to the latest announcement from the Quang Tri Provincial Museum, the historical site will officially temporarily cease welcoming visitors from August 23, 2025. This is a necessary step to facilitate the construction of the Thong Nhat Park project, a large-scale project expected to enhance the historical and cultural value of this sacred site. The decision to temporarily suspend operations not only ensures absolute safety for visitors but also represents a commitment to a worthy "rebirth," promising a fresh, more modern look for the historical site.
The temporary suspension of visitor access to the Hien Luong - Ben Hai historical site is a strategic move, part of the Thong Nhat Park project, which was approved by the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee at the end of 2024 with a total investment of up to 80 billion VND. This project is not simply a repair, but a comprehensive overhaul, aimed at preserving the core values of the historical site while improving service quality to meet the increasingly high demands of tourists.
Hien Luong - Ben Hai, a destination of aspirations for peace.
According to the plan, construction work will last from August to the end of December 2025. During this time, the quality of visitor reception, explanations, and guidance will not be guaranteed, and there will also be many potential risks to occupational safety. Therefore, temporarily suspending operations is considered the optimal solution, both protecting tourists and creating favorable conditions for contractors to complete construction on schedule.
To facilitate the construction of the Thong Nhat Park Project, the Hien Luong - Ben Hai National Special Monument will temporarily cease welcoming visitors from August 23rd until further notice.
One of the key components of the project is the restoration and renovation of Hien Luong Bridge – a symbol of the division and the aspiration for national reunification. The bridge will have its rusted and damaged steel frame partially replaced, and its entire surface will be repaved with rare, 50mm thick lim wood to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal. The bridge piers will also be reinforced with carbon fiber panels, a modern technology to enhance stability. In addition, auxiliary structures such as the monument, the multi-purpose building, the management office, and the reception building will also be renovated and upgraded. Notably, the project will also invest in specialized equipment for a film screening and commentary room, providing visitors with a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of history.
The Hien Luong Bridge, spanning the Ben Hai River in Hien Luong village, Hien Thanh commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province, is nearly 183 meters long. The bridge consists of 7 spans, each nearly 20 meters long, with a deck paved with ironwood.
The Thong Nhat Park project is not just about restoring physical structures. It is an investment in spiritual values, in preserving and disseminating sacred historical lessons for future generations. The banks of Hien Luong - Ben Hai, with their historic river and legendary iron bridge, are not only a place marking a painful period in the nation's history, but also a symbol of unwavering will, indomitable spirit, and the aspiration for peace and unity.
This is a witness, closely associated with a glorious period in the nation's history.
Despite the temporary suspension of visitor access, the Management Board of the historical site will maintain normal operations, focusing on protection and sanitation to ensure the landscape remains clean and beautiful, ready for the reopening day. This is a thorough preparation, demonstrating the professionalism and dedication of those working in heritage preservation.
Upon completion, the Thong Nhat Park project will bring a new look, helping visitors have more complete and meaningful experiences when coming to this heroic land. The Hien Luong - Ben Hai historical site will not only be a historical destination, but also a high-class cultural, educational, and entertainment space, befitting its status as a special national heritage site.
