Fukushima - a Japanese destination that went from unfamiliar to familiar to tourists.

10/10/2016

Fukushima, located in the northeastern part of the country and ranking third in Japan by area, is a vibrant tapestry of colors. During these days and throughout autumn, the people of Fukushima are immersed in the autumnal beauty of the majestic Azuma Bandai mountain range, nestled at its foot by lush orchards of pears, grapes, and apples; the enchanting Goshikinuma pond; and the shimmering white Crane Castle with its red tiled roofs… Each season offers its own unique charm, promising visitors breathtaking scenery and, more importantly, truly memorable experiences.

Autumn in Fukushima is like this, and in just a short time we will see a very different Fukushima, when it dons the white cloak of winter.

Fukushima winter on the mountain slopes

Visiting Fukushima in winter, you'll immediately see that this destination is ideal for creating snow-related activities. Fukushima's topography features many low, gently sloping hills and mountains, creating endless ski slopes.

There are approximately 22 resorts in the province that offer snow-related activities, so tourists don't need to prepare a lot of equipment for snow activities. The resorts always have accessories and ski equipment readily available for guests.

Snow play equipment is always available.

Enjoying the beauty of snow is possible through activities like "snow shoeing," with its various variations, or simply by putting on boots and walking through the snow. The exciting thing about these activities is that you can venture deep into forests, across hillsides, or over lakes, reaching areas inaccessible during other seasons. The snow covers these lands, and you simply glide across it.

Fukushima winters have their own unique characteristics, which we can experience when engaging in ice fishing in Lake Haibara.

We'll rent fishing gear and receive instructions on how to catch fish. After catching them, we can grill and enjoy them right there, or send them to the resort's restaurant to be prepared in traditional Tempura. Famous freshwater fish from Fukushima, such as Ayu, are grilled over charcoal, emitting a fragrant aroma. Enjoying them with a glass of sake creates a warm and unique flavor that will surely leave a lasting impression of Fukushima.

The overall picture of Fukushima in winter would be incomplete without a touch of sound. We can immerse ourselves in the winter symphony created by the calls of swans by Lake Inawashiro – Japan's fourth-largest freshwater lake.

Flocks of pure white swans from Siberia, Russia, migrate to this region in winter to escape the cold of their native land. They choose Fukushima and Lake Inawashiro because not only is the winter warmer here, but it is also a land always filled with the warm smiles of the people of Fukushima.
