Statistics from the Tan Son Nhat Airport Operations Center show that the airport handled over 1,100 flights from February 1st to February 3rd (22nd-24th of the 12th lunar month). Of these, 659 flights were delayed, accounting for nearly 60%.
The airline with the most delayed flights was Vietjet Air with 257 flights, accounting for over 74% of its total operations. Vietnam Airlines also had 209 delayed flights, accounting for over 59%.
In addition, some airlines such as Jetstar Pacific had 44 delayed flights (accounting for 70%), Bamboo Airways had 43 delayed flights (accounting for 57%), and Vietravel Airlines had 20 delayed flights (accounting for 80%).
Notably, over the past three days, only 40 flights were delayed due to weather, accounting for 3.63% of the total number of flights operated. Of these, Vietnam Airlines had the most delays with 21 flights.
Therefore, the remaining flights were delayed due to the operational policies of the airline and related entities such as ground services and airports.
The statistics also show that 29 flights were canceled, but none were canceled due to weather.
There were 659 flight delays at Tan Son Nhat airport in just 3 days.
During a surprise inspection on the afternoon of February 3rd, Mr. Le Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Transport, requested that airports and airlines coordinate more closely in operations and management. When flight delays occur, airports and airlines must find solutions to alleviate passenger congestion. In cases of bad weather, as in recent days, explanations must be made public so that passengers understand.
Previously, at the regular socio-economic press conference of Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of January 25th, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Deputy Executive Director of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, stated that during the Lunar New Year of the Dragon 2024, the airport is expected to serve 850-880 flights per day.
Of these, the peak day will be December 27th, with more than 920 flights carrying over 150,000 passengers, an increase of 9-10% compared to Tet 2023.
According to Mr. Son, the sharp increase in passenger numbers has caused Tan Son Nhat Airport to continue to be overloaded, from a maximum capacity of 15 million passengers per year to now having to handle 26 million passengers.
Representatives from Tan Son Nhat International Airport hope the public will understand the situation of the aviation industry because the airport is already operating beyond its capacity.
