Journey to the Norwegian Devil's Tongue

09/08/2014

Visiting the “Devil’s Tongue” in Norway, taking breathtaking photos and admiring the magical scenery below is an experience worth having in your life.

Trolltunga is one of the most beautiful and unique cliffs in Norway. It is also known as the Devil's Tongue, because of its shape like a giant tongue protruding from the cliff licking the blue sky and the majestic scenery below. Trolltunga is 1,100 m above sea level, seemingly floating in the air 700 m above the surface of Skjeggedal Lake. The view from standing on this "tongue of rock" looking down always captivates every visitor and makes many people wish to set foot there once.

This particular rock tongue is located west of Skjeggedal, near the town of Odda in the Hordaland district. It was formed during the ice age about 10,000 years ago, when the edges of the glaciers broke apart. Ice formed between the cracks in the gorges and then melted, splitting the mountain into interesting shapes. You can still see the deep gorges today on the road to Trolltunga.

The route from Skjeggedal to Trolltunga is a 10-12 hour round trip climb over several high mountains, with an ascent of about 1,000 m. The best time to climb the mountain is from mid-June when the snow has melted, until mid-September every year.

From Odda, you can drive to Tysedal on Highway 13, take a bus or taxi. From Tysedal, follow the signs for 7 km to Skjeggedal. Parking here costs about 400,000 VND/day. The climb starts from the Magelibanen funicular (now defunct). Follow the right edge of the track, marked with a red T. There will be many other signs along the route.
