Workshop 'Developing High-Quality Tourism Human Resources in the Northern Provinces'

21/06/2017

On the morning of June 13, 2017, at the Saigon Halong Hotel, Bai Chay, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, the Vietnam Tourism Training Association, in collaboration with the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism and Ha Long University, organized a scientific seminar entitled "Developing High-Quality Tourism Human Resources in the Northern Provinces".

The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Dao Manh Hung – President of the Vietnam Tourism Training Association, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Anh Tuan – Deputy Head of the Training Department, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, along with representatives from the General Department of Vocational Training, and tourism associations of the northern provinces; on the Quang Ninh side, there was Ms. Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, and leaders of relevant departments and agencies.

Ms. Vu Thi Thu Thuy, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee, affirmed that Vietnam's tourism industry is increasingly developing and integrating into the world, therefore, training high-quality tourism human resources is extremely necessary given the current state of tourism in our country. Tourism training must "closely follow reality" by creating connections between tourism training schools and businesses so that students can understand what businesses truly need and improve their skills. The Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee also hoped that relevant departments and agencies would regularly organize conferences and seminars to develop the best solutions to tourism problems, contributing positively to the economic restructuring process and promoting tourism development.

Professor Dr. Dao Manh Hung also shared the same view, stating that in the coming time, training institutions and management agencies need to train high-quality human resources to meet the Party's Resolution 08-NQ/TW on developing tourism into a key economic sector.

In his presentation "Strengthening the Training and Development of Tourism Human Resources in the Northern Region in the Current Context," Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Tuan emphasized the potential and strengths of tourism products and human resources development, highlighting the current state of high-quality human resource training in the tourism industry, and proposing several solutions. According to Associate Professor Dr. Le Anh Tuan, the training of high-quality human resources should focus on three solutions: state management agencies need to develop a set of professional skill standards; establish standards for job positions within the management system; review and identify human resource development needs; and strengthen the selection of qualified personnel and send them for training abroad in areas where there is a shortage. For tourism businesses, it is necessary to coordinate with training institutions to implement on-site training; and create opportunities for students from tourism training institutions to practice their skills at the workplace. Send experts to participate in activities related to curriculum development, teaching materials, and directly engage in professional exchanges at training institutions. Finally, training institutions need to focus on innovating teaching methods towards a competency-based approach, enhancing professional skills and foreign language proficiency; improving the professional and foreign language skills of teachers and lecturers; and fostering collaboration among training institutions in unifying expertise, exchanging knowledge, and establishing linkages between training institutions.

The workshop included 30 papers from authors who were former provincial and city leaders, scientists, lecturers, and businesspeople from the northern provinces. All the papers demonstrated love and dedication to Vietnamese tourism and shared a common desire to contribute to developing solutions for training high-quality tourism human resources.

At the workshop, Mr. Trinh Dang Thanh, Deputy Director of the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, highlighted the current situation regarding the inadequate training of human resources in Quang Ninh, the insufficient infrastructure to meet tourism needs, and proposed several solutions, hoping that the workshop would identify and address these bottlenecks.

From the perspective of educators, Mr. Tran Trung Vy, M.Sc., representing Ha Long University, provided a relatively detailed analysis of issues such as: the teaching staff, training programs, facilities, and especially the connection between students and employers, with the aim of improving training so that students can acquire the most accurate skills.

The workshop was organized with the aim of proposing solutions to address the challenges in human resource training. Training high-quality tourism human resources to meet the demands of international integration in general and ASEAN integration in particular is not easy for tourism training institutions. However, with the involvement of training institutions, state management agencies, and tourism businesses, it is certain that in the future, Vietnam's tourism training will best meet the requirements of domestic employers and may even be "exported" to regional and global markets.
