Korean TV station gives one-sided information about Vietnam's quarantine area

27/02/2020

On February 25, a wave of outrage erupted after YTN News (South Korea) posted one-sided information and negative comments about the quarantine area in Da Nang, where a group of Korean tourists had to be quarantined at this time.

The news that angered the domestic online community was broadcast on the Korean YTN News channel on February 25. Accordingly, this channel shared a video clip recording the scene of 20 Koreans being quarantined in Da Nang. These tourists all departed from Deagu (South Korea) and boarded a flight to Vietnam on February 24, then were taken to a quarantine facility by the Da Nang Department of Health.

It is worth mentioning that, through the posted video clip, this news channel made many one-sided and harsh comments such as: citizens of their country are being "detained" in poor facilities, cramped isolation rooms, etc. People appearing in the video shared that they "feel unfairly treated"; although they do not have any symptoms of infection, they are still strictly "confined"; not provided with adequate meals. One character in the video even said that he only received "a few pieces of bread" for breakfast.

YTN News believes that the tense epidemic situation in South Korea is the reason why its citizens are being treated unfairly abroad.

This incident immediately created two opposing reactions. A group of Koreans were angry because their compatriots were treated badly in Vietnam; meanwhile, a large group of Vietnamese people were also upset because of the incorrect use of words by YTN News and this group of Korean tourists. In just one day, the keywords #ApologizeToVietnam and #KoreansStopLying quickly topped Twitter. On Facebook, many famous Vietnamese people also "defended" the country by expressing their love for "bread" - which is an internationally famous culinary culture of Vietnam.

In fact, since the Covid-19 outbreak, quarantine areas in Vietnamese cities have continued to receive and care for thousands of people returning from epidemic areas. Meals in quarantine areas are safe and nutritious to ensure citizens have enough health to prevent the epidemic. Citizens after the quarantine period are all in good, stable health, and Vietnam has not recorded any cases positive for coronavirus in quarantine areas.

The Da Nang City government has not made any comments or explanations regarding the controversial incident of YTN News. The entire city's forces are focusing on implementing Covid-19 epidemic prevention work, in a timely and strict manner, in the face of the tense developments of the epidemic worldwide.

Currently, this group of people has also been brought back to Korea by the Da Nang government.
