Residents and visitors to cinemas, museums, stadiums, and other cultural events in France will have to prove they have been fully vaccinated or have tested negative for Covid-19. This regulation came into effect on July 21st because France was facing a new outbreak linked to the Delta variant of the virus.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced that regulations requiring guests to present a Passe sanitaire or Covid-19 Pass (vaccine passport) at events and venues with more than 50 attendees will take effect from July 21st. In August, this regulation will be applied to restaurants, cafes, and shopping malls.
Visitors to the Eiffel Tower who are unprepared need to queue for a rapid test on-site. Other visitors need to have a negative test result, proof of recovery from a previous Covid-19 infection, or documentation showing they are fully vaccinated.
In addition, people are still required to wear masks in public places, especially in the southern part of the Pyrénées-Orientales administrative region (bordering Spain) and the western part of Charente-Maritime (near Bordeaux). These are popular tourist destinations where the number of Covid-19 infections is increasing.
Currently, the Covid-19 infection rate in Paris and the western and southern regions of France has reached alarming levels, with 50 infected per 100,000 people. However, the government is hoping that widespread vaccination will mitigate the impact of this fourth wave of the pandemic.
Prime Minister Jean Caster stated on July 20th that it is estimated that by the end of July, 40 million people will have received their first dose of the vaccine, meaning France's vaccination target will be met about a month ahead of schedule.
