18/08/2019

September and October are the autumn months in the Northern Hemisphere with rows of yellow leaves and red maple leaves covering the paths, while in Australia it is spring with hundreds of colorful flowers. This is the most beautiful time of the year to enjoy the spring with fragrant flowers in the clear blue sky, especially the unique colorful Floriade flower festival in Canberra.

This year's Floriade flower festival in Canberra takes place from September 14 to October 13, 2019, and is one of the biggest spring festivals in the land of Kangaroo.

Canberra is blessed with a cool climate and humidity that is suitable for trees, so this city is nicknamed "bush capital". That is also the premise for the birth of Floriade. The name of the festival is based on the Latin word "floriat", meaning to decorate with flowers.

Origin of the festival

The Froriade flower festival first took place when Peter Sutton and his colleague, landscape designer Chris De Bruin, proposed a major flower show to celebrate Australia's bicentenary and Canberra's 75th birthday.

The festival opened in 1988, showcasing beautiful exotic bulb-forming plants, including annuals and seasonal plants that thrive in Canberra’s climate. The community response made the event such a success that Floriade became Australia’s annual spring festival. From its inception, Floriade was held next to Lake Burley Griffin, helping to boost the iconic status of Canberra’s Commonwealth Park.

THOUSANDS OF FLOWERS BLOOM IN THE FESTIVAL

Every year, over a million flowers are combined to create a stunning display during this month-long festival, along with music, cultural events, gardening workshops, art performances and much more. Floriade runs from mid-September to early October, attracting over 480,000 visitors each year.

Inspired by the Keukenhof flower show in the Netherlands, Floriade is now the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Over a million annual and seasonal bulbs and plants are used for each event.

All the bulbs are planted in the fall, along with flowers like tulips, English daisies, daffodils and more. Each year, Floriade has its own unique theme, from the layout, flower types and colors to the four-week entertainment program.
