Discover Floriade, the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere.

18/08/2019

While September and October mark autumn in Northern Hemisphere countries with trees covered in golden and red maple leaves, in Australia it's springtime with a riot of colorful flowers. This is the most beautiful time of year to enjoy the spring scenery with fragrant blossoms and clear skies, especially the unique and colorful Floriade flower festival in Canberra.

This year's Floriade flower festival in Canberra, taking place from September 14th to October 13th, 2019, is one of the largest spring festivals in Australia.

Canberra is blessed with a cool climate and humidity suitable for vegetation, which is why the city is nicknamed the "bush capital." This also served as the basis for the creation of Floriade. The festival's name comes from the Latin word "floriat," meaning decorated with flowers.

Origin of the festival

The Foriade flower festival originated when Peter Sutton and his colleague, landscape designer Chris De Bruin, proposed a large floral exhibition to celebrate Australia's 200th anniversary and Canberra's 75th birthday.

The festival, which opened in 1988, showcases stunning plant life formed from exotic bulbs, including annual or seasonal plants that thrive in Canberra's climate. The community's enthusiastic response has made the event so successful that Floriade has become Australia's annual spring festival. Since its inception, Floriade has been held alongside Lake Burley Griffin, further enhancing the iconic status of Canberra's Commonwealth Park.

THOUSANDS OF FLOWERS BLOOM IN THE FESTIVAL

Each year, over a million flowers are combined to create a stunning spectacle throughout this month-long festival, along with music, cultural events, gardening workshops, art performances, and many other recreational activities. Floriade runs from mid-September to early October and attracts over 480,000 attendees annually.

Inspired by the Keukenhof flower exhibition in the Netherlands, Floriade is now the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. More than one million bulbs and plants are used annually or seasonally for each event.

All the bulbs are planted in the fall, along with flowers such as tulips, English daisies, daffodils, and more. Each year, Floriade's theme is uniquely designed, from the layout, types, and colors of the flowers to the four-week entertainment program.

The special theme of this year's flower festival is: National Stories and Treasures - in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Canberra, the cultural capital.

Dù đến lễ hội ở thời điểm nào, bạn vẫn có thể ngắm nhìn những cánh hoa đẹp nhất bởi hoa luôn được giữ tươi từ khi khai mạc đến bế mạc.

No matter when you visit the festival, you can still admire the most beautiful flowers because they are kept fresh from the opening to the closing ceremony.

Besides the Floriade flower festival, a trip to Australia also offers the opportunity to explore the land of kangaroos and admire unique architectural structures: the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the shell-shaped Sydney Opera House, and other interesting attractions such as Kiama Beach, Nam Tien Temple, and the Captain Cook Fountain…
