The Venice Carnival is an annual event that attracts a large number of tourists from around the world. On average, Venice welcomes more than 3 million visitors during this time. This year's Venice Carnival will be held from February 16th to March 5th.
Origin of the festival
Historically, this festival was first held in 1162 to celebrate the victory of the Republic of Venice over the Aquileians. Before this victory, people gathered in San Marco Square to dance and sing. Since then, the festival has been held annually, and by the Renaissance, the Venice Carnival was recognized as an official event.

Masks were once banned.
During the Holy Roman Empire, masks became a strict ban, causing the festival to cease. It wasn't until 1979, in an effort to revive lost history and culture, that the Venice Carnival officially returned. Since then, over 3 million visitors have flocked to Venice annually to attend the festival.

The "most beautiful mask" contest
The most important event of the festival is the Best Mask Contest, which aims to find the most unique and creative costume. The judging panel includes professional fashion and makeup designers from around the world.
Traditional Venetian masks are a prominent feature at the Venice Carnival. Masks play a significant role in the city's arts and culture. During the festivities, mask makers become even busier to meet the surging demand for costumes. Each artist strives to have their creation win the award for Best Mask. This year's Venice Carnival will take place from February 16th to March 5th.

Recreating a 17th-century Venice.
Venice Carnival is an opportunity for people to escape from everyday life and transform themselves into someone else. Besides the elaborate masks and costumes, the entire city of Venice is decorated with medieval-style ornaments and staff, making it feel like a return to the 17th and 18th centuries.

The number of visitors attending the festival was very large.
Throughout the festival, there are also spectacular parades both on the streets and along the canals. To be able to see these special parades, visitors must arrive very early to secure a good spot because the festival attracts a large number of attendees.

Many spectacular performances took place throughout the festival.
Beyond the parade, the streets of Venice will be filled with carefully selected and prepared spectacular performances to enhance the atmosphere of Venice Carnival. Visitors will witness stilt walkers and circus performers showcasing their talents in vibrant costumes.
In addition to street performances, a large outdoor stage was also set up for music and theatrical performances. These art forms play an important role in the spiritual life of the Venetians in particular and Italians in general.

The "flying angels" performance - the most anticipated highlight of the festival.
The annual Flying Angels show in St. Mark's Square is also a highly anticipated highlight of the Venice Carnival. It serves as the opening act for the festivities. At night, colorful masquerade balls are held inside the grand, luxurious restaurants.
