The Amazing Tour 8 program, in partnership with THACO AUTO, had memorable experiences at Con Son Island – an ideal location to experience the culture and life of the Mekong Delta. The entire group participated in making traditional cakes and puffed rice snacks, and learned about the unique local pastries.
"Anyone from the Mekong Delta has probably eaten traditional cakes. Cakes like apricot cake, beef cake, banana cake... with their rich, sweet flavor combined with creamy coconut milk, have shaped the childhood memories of those from this region, memories they will cherish wherever they go," shared Huynh Thuy Vi, Miss Tourism Can Tho City.
Members of the group are on the Hau River preparing to visit Con Son Island.
Con Son is a small islet located in the middle of the Hau River, connecting the two provinces of Can Tho and Vinh Long. With a sparse population of only about 100 households, it possesses the rustic beauty of the Southern Vietnamese countryside. Nature has bestowed upon Con Son a rich natural ecosystem, with lush orchards laden with fruit.
The name "Con Son" (Son Island) originates from the historical formation of this place. In the past, the island was home to many lacquer trees, a rare species used to make gilded lacquer for decorating wooden furniture. Traditional crafts on Con Son Island existed for a long time but gradually declined. The local community shifted from agriculture to fish farming and seasonal fruit cultivation.
The delegation was greeted with warmth and enthusiasm from the local people.
It is known that Con Son tourist area was established in 2004, originating from a "One Day as a Farmer" program by a group of students. The support of the local community helped the students complete this program. From then on, the area began to focus on community-based tourism, and has developed to this day. In 2015, the tourist area officially opened. Over time, it has become increasingly well-known and attracts many visitors. Each family on the island runs a business in its own way, creating unique tourist experiences for visitors. The enthusiasm and generosity of the local people have contributed significantly to the increasing affection and appreciation the area has received from tourists.
Miss Tourism Can Tho City, Huynh Thuy Vi, is proud that her hometown has a rich and unique variety of cakes.
After experiencing making traditional Vietnamese cakes in Con Son, beauty queen Huynh Thuy Vi shared with Travellive: "When making or eating cakes, besides the delicious taste, I also feel proud to be from the Mekong Delta, proud that my hometown has such a rich and unique variety of cakes. That's why Can Tho has hosted the Southern Traditional Cake Festival for many years with great success – this is also a distinctive feature when mentioning tourism in Can Tho. So I'm very proud, and wherever I go, I introduce the traditional cakes of my hometown to everyone."
As a native of the Mekong Delta, Huynh Thuy Vi – the Miss Tourism Can Tho City – is no stranger to the traditional cakes of the region. However, every time she gets to participate in making them herself, she feels a surge of emotion, and childhood memories come flooding back.

For Thuy Vi, a true native of the Mekong Delta, the activities that truly reflect the riverine culture are what she enjoys and encourages tourists to experience, such as visiting fruit orchards, making traditional cakes, and crossing monkey bridges. Learning about the traditional craft villages on Con Son Island gives the tour group a deeper understanding of the local culture and people. The interesting experiences and the warm, friendly nature of the local people have also left a lasting impression on the group.
"People from the Mekong Delta are lovely and very hospitable. When guests come to their house, they'll bring out whatever chicken or duck they have to offer, even if it's the first time meeting, they feel familiar and warm as if they've known each other for a long time," Thuy Vi recounted. Indeed, they aren't very wealthy, but perhaps the gentle riverine region, enriched by alluvial soil year-round, has given them an invaluable asset: the quintessential Mekong Delta character.

The tranquil waterways of the Mekong Delta leave a lasting impression on those who visit for the first time.
Crossing monkey bridges is also a unique feature of this place.
