Experience traveling with children on long flights

15/04/2014

Preparing food in advance or bringing light toys for children to hold on the plane are some suggestions to make the air journey go smoothly.

Princess Kate Middleton and Prince William recently had a long flight with their 8-month-old son. For the royal couple, taking their young child with them is not too difficult because they have a private plane, a nanny and many servants, bodyguards and assistants.

However, not everyone has the advantage of taking children on long flights. Here are some tips shared by a mother working in Bangkok, Thailand, who regularly takes her two young children to visit family in Canada on long-haul flights.

Prepare meals for children in advance

Meals for children should be carefully prepared so that if they cannot eat the food served on the flight, they will still have food to spare and will not go hungry.

Many airlines around the world allow customers to order children's meals. Keep this in mind when booking your flight.

Snacks such as chips, lollipops... are not recommended for children to eat too much because of some side effects such as tooth decay, obesity... However, allowing children to eat a little snack on the plane will help them to be entertained and sit still for a few hours during the flight.

You should avoid bringing snacks for your child such as chocolate or foods with too much sugar.

Bring toys

For long-haul flights, we can make concessions to the "30 minutes of TV per day" rule for children. In addition to bringing some light toys like small teddy bears, we can let our children play with children's applications on iPhones and iPads. Letting them comfortably watch cartoons shown on the plane is also not a bad idea. When children focus on something, they will sit still and not disturb those around them.

Some children can sleep anywhere, but others can't. If they can't sleep on a plane because of the "homelessness" or different conditions, they'll easily get tired and become irritable and fussy. Try to book flights that are late at night, when your child will be more likely to sleep than flights that are midday.

Comforting the child

For those who have experience sitting in the same cabin with children, they often cry during takeoff and landing. The reason is that the change in pressure will make the children feel uncomfortable. At these times, pat and cuddle them. For younger children, you can give them a bottle or pacifier. The sucking action will reduce the impact of pressure and distract their attention, making them feel a little more comfortable.
