Located on Middle Island off the west coast of Australia, Lake Hillier is a hugely popular tourist destination known for its unique pink waters. Visitors are often amazed by the lake's striking color whenever they visit the Recherche Archipelago.
Many scientists from around the world flocked to this unique lake to find out what gave it its distinctive color. After months of research, scientists discovered that the agents creating Lake Hillier's pink color are salt-loving bacteria and a special type of algae called Dunaliella salina.
Despite its beauty, visiting Lake Hillier is not easy. There are only two ways to access this body of water: by air or by water.

By hiring a helicopter tour, you'll have the opportunity to observe the entirety of Lake Hillier, the pink lake, and capture this stunning moment from the air. The lake's color is particularly striking against the blue of the ocean. However, a drawback is that this pristine island has no landing spot, so you can only admire it from afar.

If you want to see Lake Hillier firsthand, you can take a boat from the town of Esperance. Boats depart early in the morning and return to the dock in the evening. The cost of traveling by boat is not as high as a helicopter service. However, the journey to explore the islands is quite long, so tourists should prepare themselves physically before embarking on the trip.
Besides Lake Hillier, Australia also has other pink lakes in Murray Sunset National Park in Victoria. Unlike Lake Hillier, the lakes in the park don't maintain their pink color year-round, only becoming vibrant in late summer. Local authorities advise against swimming in the lakes due to high salt and bacteria levels. Additionally, tourists should bring plenty of filtered water as the lake water is not potable.

Although considered a unique tourist attraction of Australia, pink lakes are not found only there. An estimated 29 pink lakes have been discovered worldwide, ranging from Lake Retba in Senegal and Lake Salinas de Torrevieja in Spain to Lake Pekelmeer in the Caribbean.
