Last June, the Tam Ky City Youth Union organized a painting program with the theme "Murals of the Coastal Village". The main content focused on marine life, people, landscapes, and the daily life of the people in the fishing village.
The competition attracted many artists and volunteers.
The competition quickly attracted a large number of talented young people and youth union members studying and participating in activities at affiliated Youth Union and Young Pioneer organizations. Participants were divided into three categories: ward/commune level, school level, and club/independent artist level.
Many households donated sections of their house walls for murals to be painted.
When the competition was launched, many households in Hoa Trung village, Tam Thanh commune, readily donated sections of their house walls to beautify the Tam Thanh mural village.
After more than half a month, nearly 30 vibrant paintings have been completed. The Tam Ky City Youth Union provided partial funding for the painting process, including paint and drinking water.
Artist Pham Dinh Hai.
Artist Pham Dinh Hai is working on a 15-meter-long, 5-meter-wide mural on the wall of a local resident's house, with the theme of Tam Thanh. The painting depicts the daily life of people in the coastal area, rowing small boats to brave the waves and go out to sea to catch seafood.
Even the old, weathered walls were given a makeover.
The walls of the former single-story houses, once covered in moss, are now adorned with vibrant colors. The mural village has a high population density. The houses, built close together, easily create a striking impression and showcase vivid paintings.
A painting of a sea turtle.
Sea turtles – a rare animal – are depicted on walls to raise awareness about protecting this species. Recently, residents of Tam Thanh have caught several sea turtles in their nets and handed them over to authorities to be released back into the sea.
Nearly 30 additional paintings were created in the village.

Mr. Tran Khanh Binh.
Mr. Tran Khanh Binh, a resident of the mural village, shared: "Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the village was crowded with visitors, but now it's less so." He also said that with the murals, tourists will have a place to visit and take pictures once the pandemic is over.
The basket boat route.
Besides murals, visitors to Tam Thanh can also admire the basket boat road. In this village, dozens of basket boats have been painted by artists and displayed along the roads and on the beaches.
The old murals in the village still attract tourists.
Since June 2016, the Korea Foundation has been implementing a community art exchange project between Korea and Vietnam in Tam Thanh commune, resulting in over 100 murals. The project has transformed the once pristine fishing village into the first mural village in Vietnam, attracting thousands of visitors and creating additional livelihoods for the local people. Over the past five years, numerous mural painting programs have been carried out to beautify the village.
