Travel to Northwest Vietnam, visit Ta Van village, and learn how to make sticky rice cakes with the Hmong people.

12/03/2023

On the sixth day of the Amazing Tour 7 program, "Ha Long, Sa Pa - A Thousand Miles of Adventure," the Amazing Tour 7 group, along with their companion, the New Generation Ford Territory, chose a 20km route to Ta Van village to experience and admire the beautiful scenery of this region. Ta Van village also offers the Mong ethnic group's traditional sticky rice cake for visitors to discover and enjoy.

According to the Hmong language, Ta Van village means "large arc." This is because the village is nestled against the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, with the Muong Hoa stream winding around it in front. It is considered a beautiful painting amidst the mountains and forests of Northwest Vietnam.

Ta Van village is home to the Mong, Red Dao, and Giay ethnic groups. Tourists often immerse themselves in the daily life of the locals. Besides the homestay businesses, the lives of the indigenous people continue as usual, farming and cultivating their fields. For them, tourists are like long-lost friends who happen to stop by to enjoy some delicious food before leaving.

The Amazing Tour 7 group decided to drive their new generation Ford Territory vehicles across the mountainous terrain for about 20 km to visit a local family in Ta Van to learn more about the traditional handmade rice cakes of the Hmong people. The house was spacious, with four roofs and three rooms, supported by five or six large, smooth, polished wooden pillars in the center. Although the roof was made of corrugated iron and thatch, it was meticulously combed and woven evenly like sedge. Every window, door, and partition was adorned with colorful, self-decorated brocade paintings.

Travel bloggers Tâm Bùi and Helly Tống try the experience of pounding sticky rice cakes with the Hmong people in Ta Van village.

The sticky rice cakes of the Hmong people in Ta Van village typically have a crust that isn't too thin, resulting in a slightly firm and dry texture. There are two main types: savory and sweet. Savory cakes are round, usually filled with meat and onions. Sweet cakes are shaped like drops of honey and filled with mung bean paste. Hmong sticky rice cakes are eaten year-round, but are especially popular during spring festivals. The dough needs to be pounded until smooth and evenly mixed. Then, the filling is added and the cakes are shaped. After shaping, they are usually boiled and carefully wrapped in leaves. Chef Hungazit considers this type of cake quite delicious and even better when baked again. At this point, the cake becomes softer, and the sugar and salt filling melts, thickening and enhancing the flavor.

The lives of the local people are very simple; they work in the fields in the morning and weave cloth in the evening. Therefore, tourists will feel the peaceful and pleasant atmosphere of the people here. The people are friendly, simple, and hospitable, making tourists feel close to them, like they are part of the family. At the same time, you will be treated to delicious dishes with specialties of the Sapa mountains, providing tourists with the most complete and comfortable experience.

If you're coming from Sapa town, take Cau May street, then turn onto Muong Hoa street and continue until you reach the end of Sapa town.
