Phrathat Doi Suthep Temple is considered one of the most sacred sites for the people of Chiang Mai in particular and Thailand in general. Legend says that King Geu Na, when choosing Suthep Mountain as the location for the temple, placed a piece of the Buddha's shoulder bone (a relic) on the back of a white elephant and released it. The white elephant, after climbing almost to the summit of the hill, suddenly fell and breathed its last. King Geu Na immediately ordered the construction of a golden stupa at the spot where the white elephant fell, and to this day, the vast Phrathat Doi Suthep Temple has been built.
To reach this spot, visitors must climb 306 steps paved with beautiful bricks, flanked by giant Naga serpent statues that wrap around the railing all the way to the end of the path. Once at the summit, you'll have the opportunity to admire a panoramic view of Chiang Mai to the southeast, enveloped by majestic natural scenery, a dignified Buddha statue, and the tranquil beauty of an ancient city.
