Luchon: Where "warm winds" blow when winter arrives.
20/12/2018
Luchon is beautiful. Beautiful from the waterfalls that roar in the winter wind. Beautiful from the deep, peaceful valleys covered in snow. Beautiful even from the small stone houses nestled in the valleys, quietly captivating travelers to stop and linger.
Luchon is a small town in southern France, bordering Spain. It's famous for its winter snow sports, stunning natural scenery, and monthly festivals and fairs showcasing agricultural products, handcrafted souvenirs, and offering visitors insights into French ballet and classical opera.
Luchon: small, pretty, and elegant.
Officially known as Bagnères de Luchon, this small town in southern France is famous for its natural steam baths dating back to Roman times and became a very popular destination, attracting tourists from both within and outside the country from the 18th century onwards with its elegant Belle Époque architecture. The town center is built around the main street, Allées d'Etigny, with many restaurants, bars, and shops. This street is named after Baron d'Etigny, who was instrumental in putting Luchon on the map and developing the town in the 1760s.
Known as the "Queen of the Pyrenees," you'll easily find here charming old-fashioned holiday homes with exquisite royal-style decor, famous "Russian Holiday Homes," Neo-Palladian villas, and smart hotels. You can also find Italian-style theaters, 19th-century-style casinos, and several museums dedicated to aviation history.
Pyrenees, a ski paradise.
From afar, Luchon unfolded before me as a magnificent landscape with 13 peaks of varying sizes, including Aneto, the highest peak in the Pyrenees at 3,440 meters. Even in winter, Luchon wasn't shrouded in the quiet stillness of other places. On the contrary, the atmosphere was enlivened by the sight of cars lined up along the mountain slopes, people strolling around the town center, and renting skis and mountain bikes.
To make it easier to move around in the snow, people often use specialized boots. My first time wearing these special boots was a bit difficult because they were quite heavy and bulky. But after being shown how to use them by my close friend's family, I was able to move around more easily. While everyone was busy preparing their skiing equipment, my friends and I vied to sit on the sled, pulled it all the way to the top of the hill, and raced down the slope.
Alternatively, you can also take a cable car or tram up to Superbagnères, the first ski resort created in the Pyrenees region, located at an altitude of 1,800m, second only to Chamonix in France. It attracts a large number of tourists and locals who come to relax, ski, and soak in the hot springs of the resorts.
After a lively day of activities, we returned to the town center and enjoyed dinner with Cassoulet, a signature dish of southern France, featuring crispy stewed white beans with sausage, pork, or goose, served with a slice of toasted bread. To ward off the cold, you can also order Raclette, slices of melted cheese served with boiled potatoes, a few slices of bacon, some cucumbers, and a sip of rich wine.
Before heading home, we strolled along the main avenue, Allées d'Etigny. At night, it was no longer bustling, but became more charming with the enticing aroma of fresh bread, vanilla, and roasted cocoa beans from the confectionery shops. The small wooden cafés and souvenir shops were decorated even more colorfully for the Christmas season…
Silver waterfalls, deep valleys, and stone houses
Not only is Luchon considered an ideal destination with countless different sporting activities, but it also boasts stunning natural scenery, most notably the Cascade d'enfer, a high waterfall in the Lys Valley. We also loved exploring the small villages in the valleys such as the Oueil Valley and the Larboust Valley in the northwest. Here, you'll find lakes and waterfalls in picturesque natural settings. What's special is that all the houses in the valleys are built of stone, creating an irresistible charm for travelers.
Deciding on a tour along the famous mountain passes of the Tour de France, such as Col de Peyresourde, we stumbled upon the scenic Lac d'Oô and visited the beautiful village of Arreau. Numerous Romanesque churches are scattered throughout the valleys of Oueil and Larboust, such as Saint-Pé-de-la Moraine, built of marble during the Gallo-Roman period in the late 10th century.
Winter in Luchon offers much more than just shopping promotions, skiing, snowshoeing, or typical culinary delights… Because it's when Christmas arrives, a time for family gatherings, a time to set aside worries and find peace, gaze at the snow-capped mountains in the distance, and listen to the joyful melodies of "Merry Christmas."
