Barbouni Restaurant is located on the Costa Navarino beach resort in Greece.
That’s exactly what happened at the Costa Navarino resort in Greece. From its incredible architectural concept – a roof that moves and makes noise when the wind blows, images of the Barbouni beach bar are popping up everywhere on social media.
The restaurant was designed by Greek architectural design firm K-studio. The firm says the project was inspired by the stunning landscape surrounding it: “We wanted to create a buzz within the building, but not a static structure in a place with such a vibrant landscape,” says Dimitris Karampatakis, one of the two partners at K-studio.

“The architects were inspired for the Barbouni roof by the vibrant and hypnotic movements of the ocean waves,” says Costantza Sbokou-Constantakopoulou, senior architect at TEMES.
Barbouni Restaurant is built on a wooden platform with natural wooden columns. The architects' idea was to combine these natural materials with undulating effects to create a fusion between sea and land.
Roof with sturdy wooden columns
The roof is made from a specialized outdoor curtain fabric. The ceiling ripples at different speeds depending on the wind speed of the day.
"We did a lot of testing with different materials. We finally found that we needed a wire to connect the bottom and then make the movement smoother when the wind blew through."
The architects wanted to create the effect of the wind playing with the building in the same way it often plays with the water. From there, the building and the sea are in harmony and connected by the movement of the wind in every moment.

Aiming to create a different and powerful experience, the project has become a hot phenomenon in the media, and for the Costa Navarino team, that is a happy thing.
"This roof has a timeless design, it contains special architectural stories that will surely be told for future generations."
