Enchanted by Old Havana

25/07/2016

Of the more than 35 countries Rehahn has visited, Cuba is one of his favorites, thanks to its old streets, ancient houses, vintage cars, the surprisingly tranquil pace of life of the locals… and even the cigars – a “specialty” of this Caribbean island nation. Follow world-renowned photographer Rehahn to experience his love for Cuba after a year of opening up to the world.

In the last eight years, I've visited Cuba 10 times. Its long history, impressive architecture, and rich culture captivated me from the first visit. For me, Cuba is one of the most photogenic countries in the world, and its capital, Havana, is a destination every photographer dreams of visiting. Strolling through the streets, appreciating the charm of each architectural structure, I've captured the beauty of the city and its friendly people in what I consider to be my best photographs.

The current capital of Havana comprises Old Habana, Vedado, and the new suburban districts.

Considered the iconic city of classic cars, you can find vintage American cars everywhere, from Oldsmobile Chevrolets, Cadillacs, and Buicks to Fords and Plymouths. Car enthusiasts in Europe might spend thousands of US dollars on these vehicles. Yet, they are simply everyday means of transportation on the streets of Cuba! Classic cars are so common that Havana, and Cuba in general, are known as a living museum of classic cars.

Time seemed to stand still as I strolled through the streets of Cuba, feeling as if I had wandered between the past and the present. Strongly influenced by Moorish architecture (a unique architectural style of North Africa and Spain in the 13th-14th centuries), Spanish, and classical architecture, Havana is a perfect candidate for the title of the world's most architecturally diverse city. Havana's splendor shines through even in its ruined buildings. I always find a special charm when wandering around these beautiful remnants. The narrow streets and high balconies always leave a lasting impression on tourists.

When it comes to cigars, nowhere in the world can compare to Cuba. That's why I always relax with a cigar whenever I'm here. What could be better than leaning back in a chair, relaxing with a cigar, and watching the people go by on the street?

Cuba is the land of smiles. Visitors from all over the world are greeted with bright smiles. I am always amazed by the enthusiasm and friendliness of the people here. For me, the beautiful picture of life is painted from the smallest things, perhaps just dancing a salsa or enjoying a mojito, a signature Cuban cocktail.

Many people who visit Cuba realize that music is one of the country's most distinctive cultural features. The majority of Cubans can sing or play some kind of musical instrument. Whenever music plays, they join in the melodies. It's stylish and full of passion!

Cuba is a country of diverse colors, from its culture and architecture to its people. With a special love for Cuba, I always want to return here to fully experience the beauty of this country.
