The season of purple chi pâu flowers on the summit of Ta Chi Nhu

21/09/2020

In late autumn, when the purple blossoms of the Chi Pau flowers blanket the slopes of Ta Chi Nhu mountain, it is also the time when travelers from afar receive an invitation to enjoy the beauty of Yen Bai's mountains and forests.

Ta Chi Nhu Peak, at 2,979 meters, is part of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, located in Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province. Not only is it one of the 10 highest mountains in Vietnam, Ta Chi Nhu is also ranked among the most challenging mountains to trek.

Ta Chi Nhu mountain stands majestically in the early morning sun.

It takes you about 7-8 hours to traverse the treacherous and rugged terrain, with steep slopes, lots of rocks, little shade, sections where the wind blows so strongly it feels like it's going to sweep you away, and other sections shrouded in fog and sudden cold rain showers, before you reach the summit.

Ta Chi Nhu is a "sea of clouds" in Yen Bai, with layers upon layers of dense clouds stretching to the horizon. One of the most memorable moments for those who have had the chance to camp overnight on the mountain is waking up early, sipping a warm cup of coffee, and gazing at the fluffy white sea of clouds that seems to touch the base of the tent.

The Hmong people call this flower "chi pâu," which means "ununderstood" or "unknown." Indeed, no one knows exactly when these "invisible flowers" began to bloom in late autumn, bringing a subtle fragrance and a delicate purple hue that blankets the barren hillsides.

Note:

- The best time to climb Ta Chi Nhu is from October to the end of March of the following year. During this period, the weather is cool, there is little rain, making it easier to see the clouds and saving energy. However, if you want to see the flowers, you should go in October or November.

- Travel in a group or team, and consider hiring a local porter for assistance with the best itinerary and route. Prepare thoroughly: hiking boots, protective gear, warm clothing, and a light raincoat, as the trails are difficult and the weather in the mountains is unpredictable.

- Increase your physical activity and fitness training about a month before departure.

- Regularly check the weather forecast before departure to adjust your itinerary accordingly.
